Default Alien Cloudscape - Erik Schumacher - 08-01-2012, 03:15 AM

Hi all,

I'm new here and this is my first post. :) I thought the contest was pretty challenging and I really want to get better at this. However, I don't expect to win anything, especially after seeing the first couple of wips from the other guys, so I only take part for fun.

This is what I got after the first couple of hours. I think I'll have to rework some of the clouds and refine the painting as it really looks messy right now. Of course lighting and color values are all over the place as well. The original concept is just there as a place holder for the planet.

I guess I also got the basic shape of the clouds wrong, did I?

I completely overhauled the first cloud layer. Still lots of blending work to do, but I like the way better now.

So, after I detailed the clouds for hours I decided to lose some of the detail again with the addition fog and haze. I'm just not really feeling this thing yet, and the monotony of the clouds is kinda bothering me too. I might work on the colors some more.

I hear you man, the colors of the clouds can get to you after a while but you are doing great. You actually have more color variation than I do haha.

A small crit though, just watch out for repeating patterns in your clouds. Easily fixed, just letting you know ahead of time.

thanks for the pointer man, I hoped it wasn't too noticable, but I guess I was wrong about that lol. I'm working on it (:

I'm getting frustrated with this thing. Can't seem to make it better anymore and the psd is also messed up because of all the updates and edits D:

You captured the concept quite well. If I may - I think the clouds feel bit too solid, they need maybe bit lighter treatment on the edges to depict their physical attributes.ps. Thanks for your comment in my thread.
