I can see some great paintings in this challenge. All you guys make me feel like I am running behind!

But,

I had the chance to start the other day, so here is where I'm at. My weekend is free and I will be working on this matte most of the time.

I am definitely going the "more light" route with my matte.

i really like the "more light" way and also how you are establishing the "rings"

New update, new matte. I just didn't like where my original matte was going. The clouds/patterns seemed too 'forced', too concept-like, and not very photo real. I hope this one, even as it strays far from the original concept, works out. I am definitely going 'lighter', as the darker route loses color and appears more mono-tone..

@ plusultra: thank you! not sure how rings will be used with the new matte... yet ;-)
