Default Matte practice #2 - Sunset + Meteor ? - 01-11-2012, 12:44 PM

Hi you all ,

This is my second matte painting attempt.
The idea for this one is to clean it up , replace skies with a more dramatic sunset
plus maybe add a meteor striking the high building , still thinking if it's not too ambitious.

tell me what you think!

Thanks!

why a meteor, challenge, you are to paint in two more of the high rise showing stages of construction,

1 building framework small

2 building half the size and some of the components,

these will need building sites, cranes and all manner of vehicles.

The shot will show the building building stages, to be honest meteor is so cliche be different.

Cheers Rich

Don't do a meteor, do what rockhoppermedia suggested, it's a lot more typical of a production I think (not to mention kinda cool!)

Here are some notes I would typically see MP getting:
  • Cover lower SL area with trees
  • vfx sup want's some motion in the sky.
  • A bird or two.
  • dirty up the FG white buildings *slightly* (to contrast the clean towers)
  • replace all advertisements ("request from the studio")

(I made those up, but it's not atypical from the notes I see)

rockhoppermedia - You right a meteor is a cliche , i think i will use your idea which sounds kinda cool as KevinW said , thanks for that.

KevinW - Hi thank you for the notes , I will definitely take those notes into account.

I'm thinking maybe placing one Building in the back and build a construction site in the middle.
I will post an update soon..

Hi all ,

How do you handle a ref that is light by a direct sun light like the image i used for
the second half finish tower ? you repaint some parts use , play with the levels , or use a different image ?

Thanks!

there is a lot more to do but here is a small update

looking good so far, there are some areas that need a bit of work as you may have not realised what is wrong.

The fir trees look too similar might need some trimming there dont be afraid to put a few gaps in.

The buidings center lower the grey facade ones behind the building site need some perspective correction on them just slightly.

The rear tower block looks good, just a slight halo on the cranes, dont try and paint them look for similar reference and place them in. You need to fix the shadow so that its in front not the side. Use the tower at the front of the plate for reference and you will see that the front is in shadow. Compare that to the shadow on the building,

really pleased with the progress overall. Match your lighting and perspective and this will be a good matte.

Was so happy to see the progress you have made.
