Space Matte Painting + Animation -

Hey guys,
Here's a quick personal project I did these days, something a bit different from what you're used to see from a matte :) Don't forget to check the animation bellow since that's the point of this matte! Thanks for viewing
I'm just in the middle of doing some space backgrounds also and I probably have to go back and do them better, since I like yours. ;-)
I also like the ship design - it reminds me from Homeworld -series. Maybe I'll even dig those up from somewhere at the bottom of my game basket... Only thing I find slightly disturbing is the blue line continuing from the edge to the edge - it kind of cuts the ship in half, but that is just a matter of opinion. In the animation it would be nice to see some life at the ship that size - some lights changing, strength of the thruster changing, shuttles going in or out or some other minor movement that indicates that something is happening.
At the animation some rocks look very sharp and contrasty, but I'm not sure if they should or not. So no crits there, since currently don't know how to fix it or should it be fixed at all. ;-)
Hey halen, thanks. You're right, though the reason there's no activity around the ship is because of the story - the progenitor ship is derelict and partially destroyed, still fueled by an ancient core, but other than that without any life.

I've used 3dsmax for asteroids and manually adjusted the position/scale and spinning for each of them - so that they may seem more natural - then rendered the sequence as PNG with motion blur.
For compositing I've used After Effects. The lens flare is an added post-effect, again manually adjusted (with keyframes) to match the movement of the rock in front of it :)
