This is a matte painting I did for the movie: A Different Loyalty. The shot was film in Montreal Canada. I was asking to make it look like it was film in Moscow Russia during the cold war. The trees are hand paint. I didn't have any picture of Moscow with a good perspective. I had to rebuild all buildings in Photoshop to give them the right camera angle. I really enjoy doing this matte. I whish I had more time to spend on the trees, they still need a bit more detail i think.

The trees, building and the cold mood look great.
I just think that the blue highlights on the ground could have changed similar to sky.

I agree with you Homer for the blue highlight on the ground, it's not like that in the movie. But because there were soldiers walking over it, they prefered to do this effect in comp... So it was not part of the mattepainting :)

The trees are painted (no 3D). Actualy I just past a lot of time doing the first one. Then I duplicated it, flip it, and make some changes to create all the other trees.

Something about this shot doesn't look quite right. The highlight on the foreground live action seems bright for the over cast sky eith er that or the saturation. Considering the highlight and direction of the light on the live action...the top part 2 faces of the huge building in the back - the right face would be brighter I think than the left face. But for that sky it seems not bad. The highlight on the Moscow type building with the peaks seems to co-incide with the highlight hits of the live action though. Not sure if it was the compositors' position to adjust the live action or adjust the backround to accomidate the lighting of the live action. For trees you can try out maya's paintfx to get you started...it's pretty good when not too close to the camera.
Good work though overall Jessy.
