Default Digital Matte Painting Diploma at VANAS - 02-28-2015, 12:27 AM

Hi All,

I'm happy to find this forum for Matte Painting, there seems to be the need for a centralized resource for this awesome art.

We have a new Digital Matte Painting program at Vancouver Animation School (VANAS) that I'd like to tell you about. At VANAS we conduct annual industry consultations with various studios (typically 5 - 15 major studios) to get to know the positions that are in demand. For the last 2 years we have seen that the demand for Matte Painters has been growing, becoming more popular in a way, or recognized by studios as a position to have in house. At the same time, there is no training in a formalized manner; while there are some short courses and other initiatives, matte painters are self made through years of mostly empirical work in studios, moving from an artist position to a technical artist.

With all this in mind, to follow our school mandate; we have embarked in the journey of bringing formal education for aspiring Matte Painters. There were some key elements that aligned and made this program possible, in no particular order: Mario Pochat (VANAS founder) for assembling all the moving parts of this program, Alex Jenyon (Head of Matte Painting at MPC) for the curriculum development and facilitating the communications with MPC, MPC itself for recognizing the need and being proactive to support the initiative, The Ministry of Education in Vancouver British Columbia for recognizing and granting a Canadian Accreditation to the Digital Matte Painting program under the British Columbia Education Quality Assurance.

You can find the end results of our diploma program in our website:

And press coverage here:

Thanks for reading.

Ryan S.

PS, I have posted some jobs on the forum too, we are looking for experience matte painters for our faculty.
