Default Town Gate Update - 04-09-2012, 04:27 AM

Hi Guys,

This is an update for the town gate challenge on the cg tantra forum.

I initially modelled basic buildings in Maya which I then brought into PS and worked over the top of.

In this update I've added dirt, weathering, cracks and looked to really break up the cg model.

Any thoughts/ comments would be much appreciated.

Many thanks

Hi,

Many thanks for your comments.

Here is a link to the camera projection. I've also included a screen grab showing the projection in Nuke.

Thanks again.

It's working very nicely.

At this stage there is not much to say, but I think the buildings could benefit if some of them were made in different materials, or at least look older/newer than others.

I would guess that a city or village is built from inside to outside, thus the inner buildings would be older than the ones in the outskirts.

The same applies to two-store buildings, I guess that since space was not an issue, all houses would start out as being 1 store only, and then when there was no longer room around to expand sideways, they would build the upper floors, hence these would look newer than the bottom ones.

On the other hand, top floors are more prone to the natural elements, therefore the roofs would be more decayed than the rest. Sun burns the paint, rain creates moist and darkens the houses corners, etc...

Hello Micheal. I know you have been working on this for some time now and I have enjoyed seeing the updates and progress.
I think most of what you have done to this point is working well but there are some things that you can add that I think would go a ways to making it more believable as a photoreal Matte.
1. It is very empty. Try adding stuff in the town. It is completely barren. In fact a ghost town has more stuff laying around then this does. Maybe some old carts or places they tied their camels to .....
2. Try adding some atmosphere. Take down the blacks in the back of the town. Right now they are the same level (if not even darker) as the entrance and that really destroys the depth I think you are looking for.
3. You need a new ground. Right now it just looks like it is sitting on a pink concrete slab. And add some integration where the ground touches the walls, it just feels too straight lined.
It has come a long way since you first posted and is looking good. I hope these comments will help.
