Default What DVD or book should I get? - 03-12-2008, 10:11 AM
Hey Everyone,

I recently started playing around with developing matte paintings and I am on my second one. The way I am going about developing a painting is I take a main image and build on it with other images I find or have.

I need a good dvd or a book to get pointers from on combining different images to get a nice result. Which one would you guys recommend? I have looked at the gnomon workshop there are bunch there. But I have no idea which one would be best for me.

Check out Dylan's or Dusso Intro Gnomon DVDs to start with.

They go over composition, color, perspective. All things you need to know to complete a successful matte.

Its not just about using images.

Thats what I did when I first started out.

Thank You for the reply Timmay. I think I will go ahead with one of the introduction dvds. You did bring up a very good point about composition, color and perspective.

Going heavily into photos when you first start out is probably the worst things you can do. Of course, most of us here did the same when we first started practicing matte painting, but it really is true that developing your traditional skills is very important. Those Dylan Cole intro dvds will be of great benefit to you.

I recommend starting out with Christian Lorenz DVD first. Then move to Chris Stosky, then Dylan and finally Dusso.

Also, Alp Altiner is planning to publish a new book on matte painting this year.

Has anyone watched the "Speedpainting to Matte Painting" DVD from Gnomon? Curious how it is, the other Steambot DVD on concept design was pretty damn good.

Chris Stoski has used Shake in his training dvd, which i don't have any access.
i already ordered Christian Lorenz both the dvds, hope it will help me learning the fundamentals.
