Masonite is a smooth hard particle board. I dont think there is any difference between it and hardboard. masonite is usually sold at lumber yards and is cheaper than the hardboard I find in art stores. basically the same thing though. Ive never used gouach on masonite. Illustration board may be a good way to go as well.
