Matte paintings are created to be used as a background image or for a establishing shot. In most cases there is no need to actually paint bodies or faces because these are filmed against a green/blue...

I'm glad you like Vue. It is a wonderful program and now many studios are starting to use it. If you plan to buy it, get Vue 6 Infinite or Xtream (to use along with Maya, 3DS max, etc..)

I recommend starting out with Christian Lorenz...
I recommend starting out with Christian Lorenz DVD first. Then move to Chris Stosky, then Dylan and finally Dusso.
Also, Alp Altiner is planning to publish a new book on matte painting this year....

Well...looks good but there is no good composition in this painting. Maybe if you crop the scene and increase the ship size may help. Also, I think it would be good to remove the person on the pier....
