I think there's a slight confusion here - doing...
I think there's a slight confusion here - doing projections doesn't mean you do 3D;
You are still a matte painter and are still doing matte painting work, you just have to patch up and paint...

I'd say the dry grass you added makes the castle seem very tiny - an unfortunate optical illusion. Also it doesn't make quite much sense with all the other green around.

You need to open the vue file (the one you used with the max scene) as a standalone and inside it create a projection texture/camera. Then save, exit, go to max and voila :)
