Hello tobsche,

Here are some book suggestions (in order of preference) that you could look at. These will give you some history and discuss the techniques used to combine matte paintings with movies. (This is a huge topic and could be more info than you may want to know.) :D

The Invisible Art by Mark Cott Vaz & Craig Barron
Hardcover: 288 pages ; Publisher: Chronicle Books; (November 2002)
ISBN: 0811831361
Amazon.com price: Approx. $50.00
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Special Effects: The History and Technique by Richard Rickitt
Hardcover: 320 pages; Publisher: Watson-Guptill Pubns;
ISBN: 0823077330; (October 1, 2000)
List Price: $75.00 (Amazon.com Price: $52.50)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The ASC Treasury of Visual Effects by Editor George E. Turner
Paperback: 304 pages; Publisher: Associated Publications;
ISBN: 093557817X; (May 1999)
List Price: $29.95

The essence of this process is to "matte" out or block out areas of the live action then replace the "matted out" area with a painted or photo manipulated image. Thus the term "matte painting"

With today's digital technology the process is somewhat easier (in certain aspects).

I would encourage you to read the books and really pour through mattepainting.org topics and resources and the matte painting threads at http://www.stopmotionanimation.com/

You are in for a fun adventure of discovery!

Best wishes,

Hello Tobias,

I'll put some notes together .... but you might want to check thread in this site:

http://www.mattepainting.org//forum/viewtopic.php?p=6249#6249

31 is not too old if you are truly "on fire" for this work and are willing to go through all the training and practice.

Percy (Pop) Day said, "Keep painting." So ... do a lot of speed paintings for practice.

Study photography to understand lighting, lenses and exposure.

Get skilled in Photoshop, After Effects (or some high end compositing software) learn how to do simple 3D models.

Maybe some of the other members have suggestions or additional links.

Hello David , yeah I did it in the past :)
Normally I am a ScreenDesigner and worked in the past
first with 3D Studio Max and Rhino..
After that comes AfterFX and Maya...

But through my Carreer , I had changed my Skills because
5 Years ago , I did´nt find a Job in 3D ...
So I had to switch to make WEBSITES for 5 Years ore something...
And use Photoshop all the time, my favourite Skills where also Composite
Photos to an new One , Retouching and so on... So composite Photos
are not the Problem at all, but I think because I´like Photoshop
and the funny thing 10 Years I had a Wacom...

But since my Career as a Webdsigner I lost my Skills in 3D
and have to learn a Lot more again #*gg

Now through the Job-Problems in Germany ( Too many young WEBDesigners)
I want to go back to the roots , and make things for Video or Prasentation..
So I´m again on FIRE :)..

Thanks for your Advice
