08-02-2012, 07:48 PM

08-08-2012, 05:11 PM
thanks james. heres wip5... slowly gettin there :)
08-14-2012, 06:58 PM
and another wip, have lightened the grade somewhat, trying to work out this atmo perspective is interesting, the clouds in the bg getting darker is hard to get used to :) dave
08-20-2012, 01:50 AM
and another tweak and grade...
08-20-2012, 02:49 AM
Looks great, very nice...but, in my opinion it is more "Concept oriented" than a matte painting...
I would remove the Color Grading and the space ship as well, cause, these elements, shouldn't be a part of a matte...
But this is just my opinion working in production....and try to follow the same way to work as delivering....
anyway...very nice paint....
08-20-2012, 03:56 AM
thanks... yeah agree on the ott grade, the spaceship was never gona make the final cut, just there to help me think of scale and a bit of fun for now... :)
I think it's my favorite of all the entries so far, the cloudscape looks very dramatic and realistic. I envy that. It's true it doesn't follow the concept art very closely, maybe that's why I like it so much. :-D
08-21-2012, 05:10 PM
thanks Erik, you're not the only one getting frustrated :) the grade on this is going to do me in... I think I will run with lighter clouds in the distance like our atmo... I realise they are backlit etc but I cant settle in darker ones (like the concept art) and keep getting challenged as what to do with the horizon. One observation with the awesome prometheus clouds is because they were more side-lit the mattes had big sections of mostly unlit space, almost blacks which looked great, really made for nice composition, keep feeling that mine looks all too even across the plate... dave

One more Fan :D
Love ur WIPs, awesome atmosphere... (li'l different from the concept) but still the best.... LIKE..
08-28-2012, 12:37 AM
thanks guys, yeah not the first to say its not like the concept... hmmm in my head it is ha!, :) maybe I need to be more literal with it, still time, new wip... cheers dave

been lookin at a lot of clouds lately (as I'm sure everyone has) and wondered whether my flat planes were too defined... then looked out the window this evening and tada!... a very impressive formation with a defined edge and even curved walls at one end... nice! now if only I took this a couple of weeks back...
08-30-2012, 12:25 PM
I love your progress, Dave :) I love the tone and color scheme. One more fan! I hope to churn mine out with such elegance. Still a ways to go for me. Great work!
08-30-2012, 02:59 PM
thanks Aaron, appreciate the comments... its a great challenge, imho I think clouds are the most difficult things work with, everything is on such a subtle level. :)
09-03-2012, 12:27 PM
and the last wip before I prepare the final, phew :) has been a great challenge.
09-03-2012, 09:31 PM
well maybe not the last ha, the dilemma is knowing how far from the concept you can go... in the rules it says if you think something works better then do it, and in the absence of a sup saying 'you have gone too far get back on track!' .... I'm playing with the comp as I'm having difficulty getting my planets to look like they're in the same scene without adding heaps of atmo... maybe a different orientation? hmmmm time ticks away :)

Beautiful work Dave! Great cloud structures! I think the original comp looks better as the light source is higher. With a lower light you would have to paint more casting shadows and the overall surface would look more darken. Great work, conragts! Good luck to you!
09-04-2012, 01:39 PM
thanks and good point on the shadows.. I shall raise the sun again :)
09-05-2012, 01:46 PM
