getting basic images and colours matched.
Im working at 8k, twice the final resolution so i can keep the final image crisp and clean.

next im going to get the lighting direction right by painting in shadows on the clouds and ill use autodesk maya to create subtle planet textures.

Thanks again MPC for this opportunity!

Jack.

not fully happy with the cloud values just yet but ill continue adding in clouds and atmosphere to blend the values together. Im having a lot of fun with this so far, clouds are relaxing, haha.

I think your clouds look pretty amazing already. I'll have to rework mine all over again lol.

Thanks a lot everyone, its great to hear good feedback so far!
Gerard, I created the planets in maya using displacements and a point light and then rendered at 8K really pleased with how it turned out in the photoshop composite.
Kire Im' liking your WIP so far as well it stays very close to the concept and looks very detailed so far.
Hey Akim great to see you here as well.
Good luck everyone, im also looking forward to how everyone else takes their matte paintings.

Since i think im gonna get this finished pretty quickly i might do a 2.5D animation inside after effects or add moving elements into it or something.

This is easily the biggest matte painting I've ever done now. 9gb file so far, hundreds of layers and i had to save it as a .psb instead of a .psd haha. Lucky I bought a new laptop a couple months ago.

I am a lot happier about the values in the composition. Now I'm just putting in final details.

Here is a link to the final image, 4K JPG

Im also uploading a breakdown video to youtube which shows all the wip images transition and 100% 8K close ups. Itll take about another 20-30 hours to upload though as my internet is 0.2mb/s upload...

anyone know where i can upload a tiff file that is 54mb for people that want to see the 16bit version?

Hi Jack, I think your final submission could still use some color correction. You still have time and I think the work could benefit from that. Just try to throw some color layer on the top if you already have it flattened. De-saturation of the whole image could be done first. Good luck mate.

thanks a lot, ill try to experiment around. I still have the .psb file so there is no problem ;)

Here is an update with colour correction I like this a lot more.

4K link: http://img253.imageshack.us/img253/7074/aliencloudscapefinal.jpg

just fixed up a few other details that was annoying me (some cloud highlights, white point of the sun, atmosphere.)

Thanks very much for looking though my progress and I'd love to hear any feedback people have.
