hello,

I am completely blown away by some of the work that I have seen in this forum as well as online. While I am not completely new to editing and shooting film, I an completely new to the art of matte painting. I wanted some information in regards to what programs would best suit my needs for just beginning or wanting to experiment with matte painting. Please excuse me for my noviceness, but you information and insight will help me greatly as I plan to take on new challenges in film.

thank you,

brasco

Best thing to do is buy some dvd's on matte painting (I recommend all of Dylan's dvd'shttp://www.thegnomonworkshop.com/dvds/dco03.html Not to mention Dusso's and Christian's). Also you must understand that it's an art. And one must have a sense of color, composition eye for detail, etc. No matter what tools you have. Photoshop is used most of the time...as is a 3d program that suits your needs.

The book "the Invisible Art" is a great reference about the tradition and recent history of matte painting. You can pick it up at most large book stores. A read though that should give you a good idea of what matte painting is and the skillset inferred in the name. Aside from learning what matte painting is, obviously continue to develop your skills painting (matte, concept or otherwise).

Thanks again,
