Hey everyone thought i'd drop a line and tell you that ballistic just came out with the mattepainting book, its on pre-order system right now though. Looks pretty good and i reconize that some individuals made it in the book from this forum. Gradulations to those that did!!! I can't quite tell, but there looks like there might be some break-downs of Dylan's work in there.

Yea I just noticed this ad over at CGTalk. After seeing the quite low turnout in the submission galleries I wasnt sure if they'd be able to get a decent book together but looks like it's been shored up with a lot of pro's work. Now looks great.

First Dylans DVD's, now this..I just cleared my credit card as well :(

Sod it

lol oh but he's so good! Well every artist gets their time, and now it's Dylan's ^^

Also Dylan has a high participation rate and posting of his artwork to help everyone out here, I think it's so great that the pros are doing this to the art community

cameo- I know.... I'm taking a big hit to my card as well, its worth it don't yah think? :)

I agree with Davibuddha, by posting his prespectives in different ways to illustrate a composition, and in fact help us sometimes individualy, gives him that much more creditablity, not only as a production artist, but also as a person who concerns himself in the improvement of others. Sometimes its hard to pull yourself away from having techniques that seperates you from other artists and maybe your hired for, but ultimately devulging information that may put you in competition with other artist that picked up the same technique. Honestly, I'm just appreciative of professionals helping others to become professionals, but this is just my opinion. :)

Think I read in Invisible Art that matte techniques and info were fiercely guarded secrets in the golden age so yes there has been quite a change in that respect. You always get the impression that Dylan, Rick and all the other pros who give up their time to help the community really do it for the love of matte painting. In that they want to push the boundaries of the art and be stoked by amazing paintings just as much as anyone else.

It's been a privilege to be featured in the book with both Dylan and Alp. They are both very fine artists whom I respect a great deal. From what I've seen the book is going to be great. Dylan and Alp and I all have breakdowns of some our shots. I just wanted to say thanks to Ballistic Publishing for including me in their book and Lucasfilm for allowing me to publish my paintings for STAR WARS: Revenge of the Sith. Both companies are a class act and have worked with me through difficult times.

I recommend this book too.
It’s a great reference for similar projects as well.

Thanks to those who did share their work in this book.
Hopefully in the next one we see some other Pros joining this group.

Excellent, I forgot all about the D'Artiste selected gallery section.

I am sure we will all be looking out for your images...not sure how we will recognise you beyond your forum aliases though.

Hi Everyone,

I would like to echo what Chris said in that I am grateful to be in a book with such talented artists. Thank you to Ballistic for making this happen. I for one am really looking forward to Chris' Ep3 breakdowns.
For those interested, I have a detailed breakdown of my Lava City painting. I also have a day for night tutorial, and a big desert scene breakdown, complete with cheesy ariships!

lightwell- I agree about the overexposure of myself of late, it just happened that the dvds and the book were publicized at the same time.

DavidBuddha, SquarePixel- thank you very much, I really appreciate the kind words.

cameo- you are absolutely right. I am a complete matte painting geek! I get just as excited, or more so, than anyone here when I see a cool painting.

overexposure of myself of late.

Dylan,

I was only joking, I've got no complaints whatsoever about seeing great work in quantities whoever its by. I wouldn't have bought the DVD's and the book if I didn't want to study as much of this stuff as possible. Please do more!

In fact, I would be very happy to invest in books and DVD's by most of the pro's that visit this forum. Inspiration is priceless.

Can't wait to see this thing. I have a voodoo doll of Dylan that I stuck with pins until he picked a few of my works for the book. :D
Dylan thanks for the selection and your feedback. Also got the DVDs. Fantastic! By far the best I have seen from Gnomon. It's a huge help to have these resources in hand.
Many many thanks.

Cheers,
Tim

hey guys I have to say , I was really happy when I got it at siggraph , and more !!! I could meet dylan ,stoski and alp great guys by the way, this book is really awesome and a cool thing for matte painters community, this is special.. the breakdowns are really cool, by the way chris ( stoski ) I was looking at the star wars coruscant breakdown and let me tell you the detail is insane !! the 3d modelling was all done by yourself?? because it could be the most mostrous 3d work modeling I've ever seen how long did it take?
dylan I'm still shocked by your barad dur and mount doom matte painting I still have doubts on how to make volcanos like that ( animation in after effects ) you should share some day the technique for all of us , please
thank you guys for including me in this book and of course for the kind words at my matte paintings
by the way dylan I got you dvd's and I think I getting some levels up in my matte painting techniques that will be reflected in my future work

Lightwell, my book arrived this morning. 3-4 days from Australia which I think is pretty exceptional. It was the same with the last Ballistic book I ordered so I'm very impressed with their operation.

I've not read through the book yet, just thumbed all the pages. It looks great though, a variety of paintings from Dylan, Alp and Chris. Great quick tutorials covering painting, comping and 3D and some fine galleries of work by other artists. Many of which I have seen on this site so a big congrats to all you guys too.

I won't hesitate to buy any future titles I like the look of. The pricing, quality, service, delivery of the Ballistic books I have recieved so far are nothing short of exceptional. Top stuff.

Yep, finally got my copy last Monday and it looks great - recognised a few of the names and images in the guest sections too which is god to see. I have been too busy this week but will be pouring over it next week. Looking forward to it!

In reading the chapter by Chris, he mentioned using camera mapping in the "Down with Love" for the opening aerial zoom shot towards Manhattan and not having problems with echoes because the shot was planned carefully. I assume camera mapping is some kind of contour grid to compose your painting on but can someone explain the drawbacks to camera mapping and resolution to these problems (such as "echoes"). Thanks.
