Absolutely AMAZING visual effects! Congrats to all
my friends at ILM. YOU SHOULD BE VERY PROUD.

I see a gold statuette in your future...:-)

Can't wait to see this film. Spielberg has directed some of my favourite films so I'm pretty sure this is in safe hands. I take it ILM was the chief effects provider then Rick?

I agree Rick. I have already seen the movie 3 times.

Yes, as far as I know, ILM did all the effects.
A very tough show, with a very short schedule.

The work is absolutely jaw-dropping. Watching it,
you forget it's visual effects.

Agreed, especially the seemless vfx in the car on the freeway, i didnt realise till i thought about it.

My dad and I were discussing that shot. It's CG as it dollies around the car right? Perfect morph. Anyone here at MPO work on the film? Fantastic VFX indeed!

Totally thought vfx rocked! I saw it opening day and was blown away, but now hearing friends and others commenting on it being just ok. Everyone keeps comparing to independence day....and I'm like this one is so much better.
I agree Rick, this is some of ILMs best work....just had a great sense of realism. And a nice darker movie for Spielberg.
escdesign/DMP Jedi....the camera dolly around car was great but actually only shot that really stuck out as VFX. My friends and I while at theater turned to each other at same moment to say wait a second...which is bad cuz you do notice it.
Still a rocking movie, this with Batman have been some GOOD summer films already.

I guess you're right on the dolly shot. I guess the only reason I guessed it was a CG morph was because it kinda looked like it. I'll have to see it again. Plus, how else would you pull that off safely? One of my favorite shots was the footage shot by the news crew of the tripods walking across the city, vaporizing everything. Is there anything ILM can't do? :P

that matte was really awsome when Tom was looking over that hill at all that red vine stuff.

yea the vsfx were amazing. I think this and King Kong will be the best visual effects this year

Actually, the thing that got me about that circular car dolly shot is that there was absolutely nothing that gave it away as being an effect other than the fact that it was physically impossible to shoot it live. Even similar shots in WHAT LIES BENEATH have a few telltale givaways as being CG - whereas this just looked rock solid real (despite the impossible camera move). They cover about two pages of rapid, frantic dialoge in that shot - all without a visual cut - which also justified it dramatically as edits would have really lessened the impact of that "world spinning out of control" feeling the scene has...

My two cents anyway.

Great movie. Spielberg in his A-game, showing the Bays and Emmerichs of the world how it should be done. (And I actually like a lot of Bay's and Emmerich's films - but you can just tell that Spielberg is miles ahead of everyone else making summer blockbusters).

I believe that whole shot of the car on the highway is a 2.5 minute continous fx shot. not quite sure what extent was fx (ie model cars/ live action etc) but i believe the actors were only on a blue screen.

saw this yesterday and I must agree that the visual effects were amazing. I think it couldve used a better score (music) I found that lacked bigtime. The story was sub par and leaves alot of questions unanswered and I was surprised at the ending. Very good visual effects though. Best Ive seen I think. The sounds those tripods made really added to the fear.
I think ill be picking up the book. Havnt read it yet and I'm sure I'll understand more when I read it.
What was the time of production from pre - to post?

The first time the tripods made that sound, I was reminded of Close Encounters :P

Production started in November for June 29 release.

That sound the tripods make is chilling and brilliant!
It's a (I'm going to massacre the spelling of this word!)

close on spelling??:-)

Rick...you're right - the spelling is way off, but this seems to be a common problem with people trying to spell 'didgeridoo' (just took a look at a CD I have, just in case).

Anway, are you sure it's a didgeridoo at all? I thought it's a fog horn (if that's the right word).

All that aside, I absolutely loved the FX (didn't like Mr. Cruise's peformance, though) - they helped to bring across that sense of utter panic...

07-30-2005, 07:25 PM
I'm probably one of the few that haven't been out to see the movie yet. I can't wait to check it out.

Aside from that though, the sound you mention being like close encounters. That would make sense since CE3K was pretty much Spielberg's first big directorial break in '77 second to JAWS in '75.

I would guess that it's kind of an homage to his first sci-fi hit that typically only the 'old-schoolers' would get.

Also, I was almost fooled the other night at the video store when I saw WOTW on DVD. But it was an earlier, seemingly more independent release. This always seems to happen. Anyone know if this indy version is any good?

I just read an article in Variety with Richard King, sound
designer on the movie. He talks about finding the sound
for the tripods by taking a "less is more" attitude with
the soundtrack. They had tried all kinds of complicated
sounds, and the overly complex result sounded messy
and, more importantly, not scary. He stripped it all off
and went with a 2 note blast from a didgeridoo. He
then did a light bit of treatment on it so it wasn't so
recognizable, and there it is. Otherworldly and perfect.
"Keep it simple". Good advice for sound design and
visual effects as well.

Cool, I agree the sound was brilliant. It was just after reading these articles about Spielberg going away from the cute and cuddly aliens (BTW I love CE3K), then hearing that tone. I coulda swore those were the same as the first two tones in CE3K :P I wish I had a camera on hand, I'd like to try out the effect of the 'death ray + person = big mess'

just before Spielberg's version.

Brilliant VFX work all around. I didn't even notice the impossible dolly shot when I watched the film in theatre. Only afterwards people were talking about it in forums about it - I was too caught up in the movie to even pay attention to that. An impressive feat as I consider myself to be a quite jaded moviegoer.

FX-wise, the other thing that struck me as cool was the matte painting of the destroyed city (as seen via the TV screen in the news van). Very evocative.

Ive seen all of them apart from the very first, black and white version. (4 all together)

The new one is just WOW

The timothy hines film is just LAMO, ROFL, LOL. The CGI stuff looks like its CGI, its got that allways "shinnyness" about it (if anyone know what I mean!) got it on ebay for ?5

The old colour verion is OK.

The movie's out on DVD now. If you haven't seen it yet, now's
your chance!

******POSSIBLE SPOILERS BELOW*******

There's been discussion about the incredible 3 minute dolly shot,
but there's another cool, seamless shot earlier in the intersection
scene. It starts with a closeup of the blond woman running down
the street, follows Cruise as he ducks into a store, then runs out
a side door as all hell breaks loose behind him. He hides around
the corner of a building and watches as the tripod passes him and
moves off down the street. A combination of three different shots,
shot in three different locations, as well as layers and layers of
totally photoreal CG care of ILM. Amazing.
