Hello all. Here are a couple new matte paintings that I recently added to my site. Here is a before and after from the Aviator. This is one of my favorite matte paintings, just because it was fairly invisible work.

And a painting I did for Blur Studio for the Hellgate London trailer. Lots of fun.

And a recent personal painting for the d'artiste book. I had a lot of fun with this, rainbow and all:) I really tweaked the angle and the perspective on this. I built a 3D model for the saucer building in Cinema 4D and then painted over it in photoshop. Very Hudson River School, though obviously not as good as those guys. I purposely left it very fantasy like and whimsical, not hard reality.

The aviator is out on DVD here on Monday, I will look out for this shot - maybe it will be covered in the "extras". Really impressive work.
LOL the houses of parliament, St Pauls and Tower bridge all in the same shot! What the heck, even Canaletto cheated his perspectives of London...although he didn't straighten out the Thames.
Jim
PS Looking forward to the DVD's from Gnomon.
Great job on aviator,
I love it when it’s invisible.
It looks more magical.

Nice work on the Aviator painting. There were some really great environments in that flick. Did you start with some rough geometry for the bg houses?

I am gobsmacked and speechless as always. Any chance of a breakdown on the London image> E.g. What was painted and what was photo reference?
Keep em coming Dylan me ole china!

lightwell- Thanks, I am glad you like the paintings. Don't hold your breath on a DVD matte painting feature, or at least not about me. I was a sub contractor of a subcontractor.
Yeah about the London shot.... there were a lot of giant demons comped into the final shot and I should have mentioned that in addition to destroying London they also rearranged famous landmarks to further mess with our heroes:)
brad-Thanks, I love the invisible stuff as well. It feels more like real matte painting, instead of neat illustration.
ecsdesign-thanks, no I did not start with 3D geo, I just drew out my three point perspective with the line tool. It was actually kind of hard to do because the miniature houses, did not really line up to one another, so I had to fine a vanishing point that kind of averaged the FG buildings.
Timser-I'm glad you like the work, I appreciate it. I unfortunately don't have time to do a proper breakdown. I did a color sketch forst to get composition and color buy-off. I then hunted my own photos, books, and the internet for reference. I had photo elements to start with for just about every piece, it just took a ton of painting to bring it all together.
And I must say that I am baffled about the phrase, " Dylan me ole china!"
British slang going over my head?

Dylan my old China
Where china would be short for china plate = mate.
Shouldn't be uttered north of Watford. Shame on you Timser

Hi
i really like the aviator matte. This is really a good one.
I have a few questions if i may.
What kind of footage did you use for the background, and how do you manage to get the trees moving?
thx in advance.

Dylan - It is cockney rhyming slang (a cockney being someone from London)
Lightwell - The reason for cockney rhyming slang was because i was complimenting Dylan on his excellent work with the shot of the Cockney capital ;)

I supervised the construction of the minatures for Aviator at New Deal Studios. Your painting was a beautifull completion of the shot.
Great Job!

I cant speak for what Dylan used specifically for the background elements but I do know that alot of photos and film were shot of the actual neighborhood in BH that the plane crashed. As far as the moving trees, they were part of the miniature. If you study the shot you will notice that the trees in the foreground move but the background is still. The illusion is caused by the camera shake.
If you goto this link it will show a breakdown of the shot and some behind the scenes footage of us shooting the crash.

Yeah I love miniature(s) effects. It shows the "Beverly Hills Crash Sequence Part 1" which has Dylans matte painting.
It's great to see a website devoted to the effects of the movie. I haven't seen it yet but I plan to this week.
Dylan your matte's are great. As usuall.
Tchook your work is amazing too!

Lightwell and Timser- Yeah, I figured it was something like that, thanks for the englishification.
Tchook- Thanks. As minieffects said, the foreground trees were a miniature, though I did replace some and add others. So most of the tree movement was in the miniature. Plus the shot was so short and witth the addition of camera shake, one doesn't miss the lack of motion. On longer shots, sometimes we will composite video footagee of moving trees shot against a blue sky, so we can just pull a key.
minieffets- Thanks Scott, you guys did a great job. I love working with miniatures. I would love to drop by and see you guys work your magic sometime. Thank you for the link for the aviator vfx. That is so great that they have a site devoted to just the fx, I really enjoy all of the making of videos. The film doesn't do your great minis justice. Beautiful work.
For reference, I just spent a day driving all over LA photographing houses and trees. It was really hard to get the right angle because it was so high, so I had to do a lot of painting to correct the perspective on my photos. It was pretty funny to watch me try to get as high as I could. I was running around on retaining walls, standing on my car holding the camera way over my head, and anything else I could think of. That is a really fun part of being a matte painter.

Sounds like the best job on earth! Running around beverley hills with a digi cam as part of your job. Beats the grey and drizzly north west of england that's for sure ;)

The full size mock up was really bad looking. If you look at the images carefully you will notice that the original mock-up was truncated cones so it had alot of flat spots. The real plane was very smooth and curvy.

oh wow, so many more amazing works from Dylan! Do you use a small camera for your photo referencing or a full on SLR camera? So fun that you share that story!

Great job Dylan. I love those kind of invisible shots.
I also like your personal painting, very cool. Could you post some of your references for that? Or are you saving that for in the book.
Anyway, thanks for posting.

Great!
Your matte painting from the Aviator was amazing! :P
Love your personal painting for the d'artiste book too~ :)
Hey there Dylan,
Great work as usual! I love to see you using C4D more often...really enjoy watching you getting better and better with that ;) I saw a statement from you in a different post saying "I suck"...well, you don't! Now on the other hand I can surely say that "I SUCK" at mattepainting and sketching ;) Oh well, keep up the great work Dylan and I'm awaiting your DVD's within the next couple of days...that should teach me a thing or two about your technique.

Gorgeous work! I particularly fell in love with your Hellgate London work. Aaarghh it's brill!! The lighting is fantastic and everthing fits beautifully together in a end of world- world domination kinda way- :) One tiny question did you use digital photos for this piece or was 3D models used..... I'm pretty new to the world of Matte Paintings...and am clueless...when it comes to the technicalities....

hey dylan, i saw the aviator matte on your website
It was a bit confusing :? I didn't know which one was the matte
(although it makes sense that the "full of houses" version would be the painted final one, the original looked more painted to me, than your version)
Well now i know
Very realistic... 8)
PS: make the superman movie cool :D
