This test was accomplished in two days to show clients the possiblities of adding cliffs and canyons via 3D matte paintings. The process in no way shows a finished matte painting but it does show the steps need to complete a shot of this nature.

Camera track original plate
Model primitive geometry to resemble landscape
Paint
Project
Render
Comp

I think the black level does not match yet.
As a proof of concept
it looks great.

Good job,
did you use one projection only?
Can you post just the mattepainting too. (the projection map)

The painting was projected in 2 different layers. One proj. for the bg cliff and the other proj. for the fg ledge. This was done in order for the painting to cover for the shift in paralax. As well I painted a seperate fg ledge that would span the distance that camera traveled between the first and last frames of the sequence. Projected that seperately through a different camera, with a layered shader to blend between the main fg ledge.
