View Full Version : coventry town centre repaint : finalized
Hiya. This is a picture taken from our office on the 14th floor here in Coventry, England. I wanted to play around a bit with inserting new buildings and repainting parts of it, hoping to keep it photoreal. (The spaceship building is obviously fake.. yes.. :)
T'was done strictly as an exercise, comments and critiques on any errors I've made would be helpful.
All the best

I like it.
Perspective is out on the new tower to the left. Your new Gherkin could do with some of that orange sunlight that is hitting the other buildings and would probably have some of the glow/reflection/highlight that you can see on some of the rooftop plant in the mid-ground buildings, especially with it having a circular plan as the sunlight will be glancing of its glazing in many directions.
I didn't notice the work on the ground at first...I guess that makes it a success!

Tim : yeah, definitely. It's more of an exercise than an actual shot though, I just wanted to see if I could reach a realistic level.
lightwell : Cool about the stuff on the ground. Yeah, the tower is a bit out, thanks. I'll look at that. The .. hmm... dildo-shaped (if you will) tower in the background imho is the most visually disturbing element in there, it doesn't work yet. I'll try your suggestions.
thanks for your comments!

Actually I think the dildo looks good
The apartment building in the foreground, you extended it downwards... something looks odd about it... maybe put that little house back on the roof?
And in the middle-ground, the short brown apartment with the funky roof. You put another white one behind it, but it looks like: 1) Perspective is off, 2) It is sprouting from the top of the brown apartment building. Definately something wrong there.
But great work! The space building actually looks good to me.
he :)
When i blur the image and look at the 'ship building', I don't think it looks wrong either, but looking at it in it's normal state it's maybe a bit too cold.
thanks for the link + comments!

I've updated it a bit more, with some more park painted in the foreground.

Nice work plaf, looking at the area you just said you added, and the paths in general, I would maybe just add a little bit more variation of shade in there. To make it look like some places are more worn than others, or a puddle has been there etc. Also, maybe add a little bit more of the pink light that appears on the other buildings onto the dildo. What youve got at the moment looks quite subtle whereas on the other buildings the effect is very pronounced.
hiya.
it's been ages since I worked on this last, but I finally got the urge again tonight. Crits welcome of course.

The foreshortening on the church looks a bit severe...almost as if the perspective is out a little. I also think that your choice of material for the roof doesn't fit. All the other pitched roof buildings have slates whereas you have what looks like a cement tile. Its not really a painting issue but stands out as being not right to my eye.
Oh and (if you will excuse the architect within me) you need some flashing (usually lead) masking the junction between the wall and the lower roof.
Lighting and materials look great though. I almost don't want to add a critique.
Actually the perspective was out a little, but it should be fixed on the latest version - And critique all you want, constructive suggestions are always appreciated :)
I'll take a look at the stuff you mentioned and rework the front building a bit more.
thanks for the comments

Ah,
I'm not alone in having to work on the Bank Holiday then!
