View Full Version : Take the final exam!

I have been grateful to all of you who have followed my digital matte painting class at School of Visual Arts this semester, and I wondered if any of you might like to try the final exam yourselves. Here are the specs:

I am the director of a feature film, and I want some fast ideas for an important scene. A mad industrialist has bought a ruined castle high in the mountains of <country to be determined>. On top of this castle, intertwining with the original architecture, are ultra modern structures, and a huge machine to suck the energy from storms. It is dark and stormy night (to coin a phrase) and the turbulent weather is rolling over the mountain. The machinery is firing up, and....

well, you show me the "and".

I have a couple of photos I found that look like giant machines, and a couple of dilapidated castles. Please put a move on this, and multiplane it, and have it to show me in exactly 2.5 hours, no more, no less (actually, 2.5 hours after you start).

Use these photos if you like. There were chosen because they are in wildly different color spaces, and feature quite different perspectives, so use them at your own peril.

I'll post what my students do on Thursday afternoon. Good luck!

Here are the shots that were created in 2.5 hours for the final exam in my digital matte painting class. I only thought one, by Kate Conrad, was good enough to alter a grade. I raised her grade by half a point for her effort--good job Kate.
Thanks to all for a great class! I look forward to doing it again in the fall.
