The screen shots look good, But I don’t know if the quality of the DVDs are the same as Dusso’s or is it the same as the screenshots?
I would like to know more about them too.

Hi my name Is Christian Lorenz Scheurer,

Please let me know if you have any questions regarding my DVD's.

The first of the DVD's is a beginners class. It was less about showing of my painting skills than showcasing a couple of techniques which truly changed my life as a digital painter, such as painting with shape, color and value perspectives and the best use of masks.
In addition the DVDs are in highres so you actually exactly see what happens step by step.
I also like, that the DVDs contain the actual base plates, so if you would like to work through the different exercises you can using exactly the same materials as I did. The first disk has also 3 additional exercises in the bonus section.

cheers

Christian

Nice to see your posting here.
I like your concept paintings such as this one;

Are there any custom brush settings included in the DVDs as well?

Hi Brad ,

Sorry no custom brushes on my DVDs but I am using Photoshop CS and that comes with so many brushes already built in. However with highres quality of the new Gnomon DVD's you will for the first time be able to see exactly which brushes are used and how..

Christian,

Sounds like the DVDs are a great improvement over the quality issues (resolution/contrast) in Dusso's.
Definitely thinking of picking up 2nd DVD.

Thanks for posting.

Hey Christian.
I'm in the middle of viewing your dvd's and I have noticed that you frequently have a technique of selecting a layers transparency by apple or ctrl clicking the layer then doing a hide selection. There's actually a little button next to the "lock feature" right below the "blend" drop down that looks like a checkered square. Just clicking that does the same thing. "lock transparent pixels" button. :)
Should be done viewing them tomorrow. I like them so far! Interesting techniques.
I hope to see you post more of your work here. Always welcome.
Thanks

Love the lighting.
Bright, Colorful and Crisp
looking forward to see more. ( High Res.)

By the way are the DVDs only for beginners?

I believe that the DVDs are everybody - not just beginners.
It is true that in the first DVD I am establishing the basics to the way I am painting, but that doesn't mean that the techniques are trivial or simple. I actually re-examine these principles every time I paint.
I was an illustrator and designer long before I started painting with photoshop... to really paint, it demanded a complete mind-shift from the line dominated thinking to the shape and color/value dominated way of creating which was for me a mind altering experience.
The second DVD builds directly on the first. It is 4-times sped up and shows in more detail one painting in comparison to the first one which has three real time exercises. I build up on the techniques demonstrated in DVD1 and reveal more of the actual thought process while painting. I hope both DVDs are relevant and complementary.

I just saw your interview at cgchannel.com,
Asking for feedback is indeed a good tip to get your work recognized.

Hello Christian,
It's great to actually know that the creators of these great DVD's frequent this site. I must say that I really appreciate your Vol 1 Digital Painting DVD with the guys at Gnomon. I realize I am hanging with some more advanced people on this site but being a newbie in all of this I can really appreciate your techniques for beginners. I have been using Photoshop for some time now and you illustrate techniques I have not thought of to use. Thanks and great DVD. Can't wait to advance to the second Volume.

Thanks for picking up my DVD's.
Here is another version of the spaceport exercise. Same base as on DVD1 but pushed alittle bit further.

After watching them, I've definitely come away with some new tricks and techniques - your approach of using masks and selections so extensively is interesting.

I've got quite a few Gnomon DVD's and so far these have provided the best value for money. Lots of very useful grounding information for both the beginner and intermediate painter and presented in a very amiable, chatty and easy to digest manner. CLS comes across as a vey sincere and down to earth guy who genuinely enjoys what he does and wants to help others get as much out of it as he does and benefit from his experience. I personally learnt a lot from these and would highly recommend them. I wish I'd had him as a teacher back when I was starting out. I just hope he produces another on how to take these concepts to final production artwork .. or a least part of an image to that level.

This is not to demean the DVD's of other artists, but I think Gnomon are improving their methods as they go. The use of the Ensharpen codec results in a fantastically readable picture. While this means they can't be used on a regular DVD player its a small price to pay for the extra clarity.
