I've been doing matte painting for a while. I've always relied alot on pictures for help. I had a plate from an old job I did, I figured I would actually paint the matte painting to see if I can. It needs a bit of work still, but I could use some crits to help me along.
Thanks,
Satch

That's pretty good! The dirt/crack things at the bottom beside the road look wierd though... not necessarily out of place but not realistic somehow.

The road thing is still very much in progress. Try it without that layer.

I think it’s better now.
Also it seems to me that there is fog in front of camera but not too much were the car is.
It might be helpful to clear the fog in front of camera and add more atmospheres and fog further away.

First of all the image is a nice composition and is well executed. Having said that , the one thing that stands out is the value range is too close together across the range of the image. I agree with the to much fog in the foreground, but in addition you may want to darken some areas further away and adjust the contrast and saturation values as you get closer to the castle. Colors fade as they get further from the camera, reletive the foreground. Also what is the main focus of the shot the castle or the car? They both seem to be at the center of attention. Try to pick an object that you want the viewer to notice first.
in my humble opinion
Great work!

ps. I agree with the cracks, too distracting.

hi,
In this kind of shot, pretty much everything should look more or less equally sharp ( look your original plate). But because all that mist and stuff, your background should look softer than foreground ( again look your original plate).
so your castle is maybe too sharp now.

Points taken,
I agree, with the fog, and the lack of single focus. I think I stared at the thing for too long and lost perspective. I will work on correcting these issues as soon as I get a chance. As for the road being ripped up, I actually meant to build that in maya and animate it as the car goes by. I figured I'd never get the time to do that so I decided to paint it for my own piece of mind. I know something is wrong with it, and have tried several different fixes but so far can't quite figure out what is wrong. Oh well I'll fight with it when I get the time again.
Thanks for the responses, that's what I love about this site.
