Hello Mattepainting.org folks! I guess I haven't been paying attention but I just found this site. (Hi Max Gabl!) What a great way to see what's going on out there. Lots of realy nice work on this site! I'll be visiting often.

I moved from LA to Bainbridge Island Washington a year and a alf ago so this will be a good way to interact with others that do what I do. Thanks Mattepainting.org!
Here's a couple samples of my work and a link to my site.

Welcome to mattepainting.org

Great site and lots of interesting images …
Amazing oil painting too
And my favorite is the tree house at night.
Do use lots of 3D elements in your matte paintings?
What 3D software do you use?

Lovely work Ron and welcome to the site.

I especially like the snow shots for Drew Carey, I think theyre a good example of that type of painting done well, particularly the Warsaw Tavern shot.

Looking forward to seeing more of your work

Cheers

Nice work Ron. Saw your stuff for the first time last week in your vfxblog interview. The detail shots are very helpful. Few artists will let you get that close to the illusion. Much appreciated. I'm curious how much of your work uses 3D and what package you use if any?

Cheers,
Tim

Thanks for all the kind words. I appreciate it!
As for the couple questions about which 3D program I use. Actually very few of the matte paintings I've done used 3D. The exceptions were the LXG fortress/factory which was Cinema 4D. We got the rough models from Escape and then I added the texture maps in Cinema 4D. All the finer details (small roof windows and tiny spires along the edges) were added later in Photoshop.
I was also given rough models for a couple of the foreground buildings in the Riddick mattes. The came rendered with flat grey lighting and I painted on top and added detail.
I'm starting to use Maya since the guys I most often work with use it so it's easier compatibility wise but I did really like Cinema 4D and had used it in my motion graphics quite a bit.

Thanks for sharing your experiences with us, Ron.
Some of your works are just unbelievably realistic such as this one;

which I really like.

And I have to learn more about Cinema 4D, to see what’s the buzz about…
