hey guys, noob here. I work for a small studio and they've just decided they want 3d projections of matte paintings in there next show. I'm having trouble getting the projection to display correctly on the geo. I did a quick planar map and it seems to display perfectly. I know very little about the subject and I'm a little bit stuck. I seem to be going around in circles. If there's anybody who can help It would be much appreciated.

here are some renders:

It's really difficult to tell what the problem is from just the information you've posted here. On the face of it, it looks like you are doing the right thing with your hypershade setup.

A common way to mess up camera projection shots is to project through a camera with a different aspect ratio to the image you are projecting - might be worth checking just in case. Projecting through a camera that's animated is another one, although that's not your problem here.

If your planar projection 'cheat' is working, though, why not go with that? If you need to patch any bits, you could always 'bake to file' and add to a layered shader. Not 100% ideal, but there is no such thing as 'cheating' in matte work.

Sorry I can't give you a 'magic bullet' fix - let me know how you get on.

Take care

Whats going on is that the projection is not projecting through geometry. Your texture map projecting a single sided texture. I've seen this happen in max and nuke but I never stumbled across in maya... yet so check through the texture settings and look for something like 2 sided texture or project through geometry. Its been a while since I loaded up maya and my 3d machine just bit the dust.
