Any feedback on improving this image would be welcomed. I'm new at matte painting and would also like to know if this kind of image should be excluded from a matte painting portfolio since it's more concept work than pure matte work (as I understand matte painting at this point:-)

You could use this as concept art or as part of a modeling/texturing/rendering portfolio. I would print the image and keep it as part of a print portfolio, but it doesn't really work or a matte painting. It's still nice 3d work though, it's just that it's obviously 3d. Matte paintings should appear as photo realistic as possible in most cases, and certainly for your portfolio
