To be a sucessful matte painter I think first of all you need to know how to actually draw and paint before you can get into integrating photos or using 3D models.
To make this thread on-going I think a sketch thread would be nice.
[sijun speedpainters would be right at home i think...but the subject matter will be landscapes and locations here]

So the rules are to basically choose a photo reference and create a sketch drawing of the photo ref. Concentrating on lighting and the overall mood of the ref choosen.

Limit the painting time to less than 2 hours to keep it a sketch. To concentrate on light and mood only, you won't have time for details.

No blending of photo elements.

Have fun :D I will update with few examples of my own in a bit.

Fantastic the first image. Nice colors.

I think it is a good idea to pick up that challenge. It looks interesting. I am going to try it, with one photo. As an educational exercise it is very good. I'll post the results....

Hi, I'm working in a movie taking place in a jungle, here I post the matte sketch for the opening of the movie. I want to show the dawn on the jungle and, later, for the final matte, I will try to find a way to make it without to many 3D trick for the raising mist and other atmospheric FX. I will try to make the scene working with soft X-dissolves between the differnt panels.
critics are very welcome

great job everybody,

Arenas,

It tells the story and it looks beautiful,
In the last painting,
Using some more layers in the left side in front of the big chunk of mist, might help to brick it up so it keeps the effect but not distracting.

you should post this in critic section (http://www.mattepainting.org/forum/viewforum.php?f=27).

This thread could use a kick start. It is a very important topic annd a great way to develop you skills. You will learn a lot more doing 10 decent sketches than you will beating your head against 1 matte painting.
Here is a recent city. Not very realistic, but it was a fun excercise. I did it in a little over 2 hours with no reference.

http://www.dylancolestudio.com/sketches/images/CityPaint78.jpg

And here is a shameless plug for my first dvd on landscape matte painting. This is a sketch that is on the dvd done in about 45 or 50 minutes. I had looked at a few photos a couple hours before doing this, but I had nothing in front of me.

Hey Dylan,

Great work as usual. I have always admired your citscape paintings. I noticed that you had said that you didn't use any reference on this particular city painting. I was curious, how do you develop these concepts and what other reference do you use? It is hard for me to develop a concept for this genre of painting, and I was hoping you could shed some light.

Again great work

Brandon-when I start the sketches from scratch, I often times just paint large blobs and shapes and see what comes of them. I usually don't have specific plan. Doing something backlit is always easy, because you are mainly dealing with shapes and atnmospheric perspective. I usually work in very muted colors and gradually add bits of saturation.

Brad- 4096 pixels wide

renderman24- great sketches! Nice clean style. You can learn a lot by doing this. There is an artist named Nick Pugh, who has done a ton of these, same kind of scenes. He calls them digital plein air paintings. Take a peek if you get a chance.

I decided to do some sketching last night and here's what I came up with.
Probably around 3 hours total for all of them.

Here are a couple of cloud sketches I did with reference.

http://img86.imageshack.us/img86/6811/clouds023pi.jpg (http://www.imageshack.us)

And here are some concepts with a little color reference.

07-06-2005, 03:59 PM
jared nice stuff!! how do you paint clouds like that? any tips?

Aedilhum
07-07-2005, 01:57 PM
Thanks Brandon.
Well one thing I tried with these that I hadn't done before is to make a custom brush for the more wispy clouds and used that at lower opacity. That saved quite a bit of time I think, rather than having to draw out every little wisp. Then for the puffy clouds, up the opacity and use one with a harder edge. For the sky I like to start out by painting in the colors I'm going to use for different parts of the sky and give that a big blur first as a backdrop rather than use a gradient or something.
I think one of the big things is to have reference, even if your not painting it directly from the reference it will give you a better idea of the subtleties in nature that you wouldn't think of on your own.

And is it just me or is imageshack down right now? I can't see any of these images.

Cheers,
Jared

http://www.marksoutherland.com/mount_sketch.jpg

I gave myself 2 minutes to sketch out the form without worrying about anything else.

THE PROCESS:
1. Lighter background layer
2. Quick Lasso the shape of the ridge
3. Fill the selection with a darker color
4. Choose light source (right side in this case
5. Burn left sides of upward sloping areas
6. Dodge right sides of upward sloping areas
7. Change size of Dodge and burn brushes and work it more

TIPS:
1. Angle your strokes close to the angle of the side you're working on
2. Incorporate more half circular sweeps than straight lines
3. Scribble, zig-zag, and overlap other areas of already burned or dodged portions to blend and create more interest.
4. The looser you work, the more you allow yourself to see it as a whole and not details. After practice, you'll start to see the forms quicker.

good stuff people. Time for me to start posting in this thread. THE MOST IMPORTANT thread about the most important thing....sketching. I love it.
Just got around to getting this down...been lurking in my head for a while. Something about lush jungles to me that is really beautiful with some kind of hidden culture deep within. I guess what I like about them is the fact that it's not polluted by society and I find that beautiful. :) Freduric Church "Scene on magdalena" used as a reference for color and some composition direction. 1hr at 25% zoom view for the whole thing. your looking at the original 100% size I was sketching it at. Didn't want to get in close and get bogged down by details. It's amazing how it looks zoomed out I must say. Plan to turn it into a matte painting as soon as I find time. A few things need adding to it..plan to update it in depth soon.

Jensen I like your "craggenmoore" painting - very nice. I see an "in progress" version on your website. I'd like to see a progress of that one if you have time. What's painted what photos used etc. Post it here when done! thx.

Bin amazing paintings I especially love the mood and composition of the green cave out-looking the arch. Very cool.

Keep it up guys.

p/s why is this thread in "matte painting challenges"? I think there should be a seperate area for this. Like "wip/sketches". anyway...

Good posts!

I hope other members of this forum will support, critique and encourage you and the other students of matte painting.

There are a number of students who are members but are shy about posting with professionals.

It inspirational to see the talent of the students who. like you, do post on this site.

Well, here is the custom brush I used on my cloud sketches. Nothing much but it does the job. The settings were just the default settings with varying transparency and size I believe.
One thing that I didn't think of before that I just tested out to stop any repitition is the random angle setting, seems to work good.

Hi JB
That is a great doodle. How long did it take? It looks like your pretty familar with your brushes. As for me i spent some of my time finding a work flow plus tring to do a quick sketch from a photo refence which for me right now is a great learning experiance. I am looking forward to getting to a level to create doodles such as yours. And then creating belivable mattes.

it took about an hr and I use primaryly the chalk looking brush various basic round brushes.Trick is have the opacity set to wacom pressure. And for the leaves or tree detail on the mountains..scatter function works awsome. I dont have any special brush packages or anything. Just the basics that come with photoshop. There are plenty in there to mix/match to create brushes for texture and stuff. Also used the generic leaf brush for the top right corner.

This is my 3rd two hour sketch.
In a post by dstipes to lukx

"do another version with painting dark tones first.

I would probably start with background and work my way forward to darkest forground colors. I do not think that is as important as the concept of starting with dark tones to register atmospheric effects then doing light colors. "

This is an attempt to follow the directions of that post

Very nice! I really like those trees!

The results are terrific. What is your reaction to the "dark tones first" approach? Was it easier, harder?

Any suggestions or observations from your painting process?

(I am asking so my students can see and understand how other painters work.)

Robert

Hi dstipes,
Working with the dark tones first, made painting so easy. For me it made the process sooo much more fun.

I started with the sky, and progressed forward from there.

First the sky
http://www.coreshadow.com/01.jpg

then the clouds

http://www.coreshadow.com/02.jpg

each area had its own layer and name

http://www.coreshadow.com/03.jpg

http://www.coreshadow.com/04.jpg

http://www.coreshadow.com/05.jpg

http://www.coreshadow.com/06.jpg

http://www.coreshadow.com/07.jpg

after laying in the flat shapes I went back and started with the mountain and moved forward from there. The last thing I did was the clouds.

http://www.coreshadow.com/09.jpg

http://www.coreshadow.com/10.jpg

http://www.coreshadow.com/11.jpg

http://www.coreshadow.com/12.jpg

I was surprised at how much I was able to accomplished in the suggested two hour limit for this tread.

I hope this was clear enough.

My next attempt will be a cityscape

Nice Job Peter,
here is a trick to make them a bit more photo realistic...

for example in this image http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y178/peterwalthoff/althoffwk8-2.jpg
copy merge all and paste it on top of the layers
change it to overlay with %50 opacity

in some cases you should use a mask to apply this overlay only in some parts ...

Nice job pandora,tobsche and Peter.

I would like to add a note to my process. What I've learned comes from other artists.I didn't make any of this up. Example, their is a great tutorial on the home page on how to paint mountains. Their is one somewhere on a post on how to paint clouds.

The challenge for me is to apply the experiance of those artists who are willing to share and have already solved the problem.

The other thing for me is the doing, the looking, the drawing, the having of my own expierence.

Post to you soon.

Hello David thanks for you reply , I ´m again on Fire....
but sometimes I also have a question...

The thing is that if, you are at work... so there is no time for expiriments...
So to leaern it´s really cool to make speedpaintings, but also I have to learn make the hole process of mattte also included as a Camera-Mapping in Maya or AfterFx ore something else...

So to learn the hole stuff , I think I should addapt the hole process...
also combine photos and paint.... am I right ??
And I miss a little bit discussions about " What do we do when the matte is finish!! so tecnics about including the matte into motion...

How do you explained that couple of things to your students??

dstipes
09-16-2005, 08:40 AM
Hello tobsche,

Experimenting and practice is essential; there is a lot to learn.

Start with relatively simple shots such as replacing a sky or modifying some small part of the scene.

Use photographic reference for detail, lighting, color, and if possible, atmospheric perspective.

Today, many digital matte artists use Photoshop or similar software to image manipulate photos into their matte plates. (A "plate" is the original scene that matte painting will be added to.)

Where you do not have photo imagery you have to create it with painting or 3D digital models or real miniatures. It can be a combination of all techniques.

All of these elements need to have matching lighting, color values and proper shadow values for their placement in depth in the plate.

The speed paintings are useful to build confidence and skill sets, and to educate your eye to color, value, contrast, perspective, lighting and mood.

Look at other artist's matte shots. Does a specific shot work or not work for you? If so why?

Keep reading, researching and experimenting.

(I hope this is answering some of what you are asking.)

David

Pandora,

Thank you for posting your village speed painting. Nicly done. How long did you spend on the painting?

If you were to finish the painting .... (I hope you will... :D )

The buildings seem pretty close to my eye. You might take down a couple of the high-lights and add a few straight lines for solid man-made structure look.

The clouds would need some sharper edges.

All that's left is to finish the foreground and split in a live action vintage roadster!

Great job!

Hello again,

I just wanted to say thanks again for the feed back, and HGLR, it’s a fine start, just 11 weeks ago I’d never used a Wacom tablet before and the more you work the better you’ll get, I suggest though when choosing a color pallet, tend to mute your colors a little more than you think is necessary it helps.

Oh here’s a quick painting I did, it’s a bit sentimental, and it’s for my father… Either way I used some old photos of when he and I went fishing as reference but all in all it’s my first attempt to paint something without a verbatim reference…

HGLR: good start! I agree with MaxLimit about the colors....you seem to have the idea with the far away mountains....its just the big one in the foreground is too saturated....also pay attention to the direction you paint in it makes a difference for obvious things like those waves...keep on doing these exercises and you'll catch on in no time!!

pandora, thanks for the compliment, but I just had to ask, you do such small detail work on those last two paintings, they look great, but I'm curious as to how you aproach the tiny brush work... do you add and take away or work in high dpi with locked transparency and a very tiny brush ... I'm really quite amazed at some of the line control.

pandora
09-20-2005, 11:43 PM
Thanks smooth! These sketches are getting quite addictive to do....I'm learning so much about how to approach painting....

MaxLimit: I work at the size it is or a little bigger....and I zoom out till there is only a thumbnail left, then I block in all the shapes and local colors......then I zoom in and out as I work to get the right perspective and composition....once all is in place i move around and add detail until it builds up......I like to use a simple hard brush with space all the way down and set to opacity....I do mess with the amounts of flow or opacity to get texture......usually its very rough quick splotches of color then i blend with a larger brush set on under 40% of either flow or opacity.....I do change my approach with each painting though....I mess around with all the brushes till i find something that works trying to find a faster better way of doing it......I want to be able to block stuff in very fast.....I admit i took way too long on my 3rd post......I tend to get caught up in detail which isn't always the best thing for these! oh well I'm learning! oh! and I also used the chalk brush, and a special potatoe skin brush i made! whatever gets the job done right!! but other than that I just paint like I would traditionally except way faster since we don't have to wait for paint to dry!

Wow! This is great! Really nice texture on the snow surfaces.
Very subtle and cool.
Yes....wispy clouds.....hmmm.
I don't have time right now to do it, but I want to make a little
demo about creating a sky using masks (friskets) pulled off of
cloud photography. This bypasses the whole issue of having to
create brushes that will accomplish this.
Needless to say, this is a great way to control your edges- always
a difficult task with PS brushes....

Looking forward to see you cloud creation demo.

Still, I'd love to learn how to hand-paint proper clouds. When I look at my reference image, there is such a vast amount of detail, I just don't find the right point to start from.

It's like a shark trying to pick out one fish from a school of mackerel - you just get lost. So to speak...

smooth
09-21-2005, 06:37 PM
I have to test this but...try subtracting/erasing from them using a scatter brush technique coupled with smudging. I think it will work better than using the scattering to CREATE clouds...but lightly subtracting from them using the PS brush engine and a little smudging should look close. I've also used the warp transform to get great shapes.

Still waiting for those damn dual core macs to be released...i'm dying to get a computer for home use so I can REALLY start DMP-ing! @##$

Ok, so here's my second attempt, yet this time I started from scratch, without a reference image - obviously...

Took me about 2 hrs or so.

Hi everybody. I've been following mp.org since it went online, mainly because I was so impressed with Dylan's work from the last few years and I found that he graced this site occasionally. Since the fusion of computer technology into movies, hard/software accessibility and the internet, MP has become an interest of mine that I recently decided to learn how to (digitally) paint - with the anonymous coaching from experts, of course. I started working on a 4k res matte paining, but it was coming along so tediously that I had to rethink my approach - hence, my obervance of this thread. So, here are my first three 45 minute photo reference sketches - all done with an optical mouse until I get a tablet.

Hello,

This is something I've created from scratch this time.
The approximate work time is 2 hours.
Basically I would like to get some feedback/critics.
What needs to be improved about light ?
What needs to be improved regarding color ?
Any advice is welcome.

Some beautiful images, Vassya. I really don't have any complaints with the landscape; with your cityscape, my only complaint would be the way the sky and water are lit pretty uniformly, and perhaps a little too brightly. The city itself is beautifully executed, though.

Nice work, everyone.

Here's a few more of my color sketches. By viewing these as a whole, it's apparent that some days I'm hot and other days I should be outside. These were done in 45 minutes. Again, all of these were done with an optical mouse.

This one was coming along well, so I spent more time on it - 2 hours. Obviously, I need to work on my edges for detailing - too much blur and blending going on - but overall one of my best of the lot so far.

great stuff everybody.
My last 3 posts were landscapes. So here is my first cityscape.
I am really learning a lot about color. My sence of color and what I get when I use the color-picker is so different. I tend so see color more saturated than what is really there. pretty cool to know that.
Post to you soon

I got really intrigued about doing speed paintings and tried some. Great fun! Most of these are 1 hour to an hour and 20 minutes. Standard hard brush and soft brush in Photoshop 7 and CS. (the bruhes are laggy in CS and not in 7. Any tips on that btw?)

Any ways, hope you like them. Thoughts, constructive crits and tips are welcome of course. Thank you twelvefield for the beautiful photo inspiration!

Matte paintings in Star Wars 3, I mean planet of Coruscant images,
http://www.dusso.com/index.html
It looks to me that he was using combination of painting programs like Painter or Photoshop with 3D software like Maya, cause how in another way he can do all those highlighted parts of buildings, glow and keep such a great sense of perspective of the city buildings.

Any other ideas or suggestions how it was done
and what he used to do so.

I've been gousting around here for a while, and i have to say there is alot of good work being posted, and sadly to say i haven't been painting much lately, but after getting a chance to see Rick's presentation at our school I figured I'd dust off the old waacom and give speed painting another go.

so here's a 2 hr speed painting I did just before the holiday.

Another 2 hr. cityscape using reference. What do you think?

Hi Daniel
Can you tell how you are using your perspective. I assume your horizion
is at the water level and that the veiwer is walking up hill towards the city?

Yo Max
Good to see your post. That is where I am at in terms of learning. I am finding that colors are less saturated than what I think they are. And only having 2 hrs it is amazing to see how much can be accomplished.

Alp!
how short is a quick early morning speedy for you?
Thank you for posting. What I was able to take from your work is the use of solid value shapes , use of a strong silloette and so much more.
Thanks again. I gotta go

Hi Robert,

Yep, your right, horizon is at the waterline and the viewer is looking up hill. Im pretty slack though when it comes to speed painings and using perspective. Maybe I should go back to using references? :?

Eisner! Your post has just blown me away.I love your composition, the use of value ,brush textures, depth, etc. Your quick sketch reminds me of an artist Paul Felix who does these wonderful tonal studies with pencil. You can find his work in Disney's "Tarzan " making of book.

I wonder, what would happen if you were to put a touch of complement just past the squiggle there at the base of the mountain or maybe just above and to the left of the squiggle?

Here is my feeble attempt, using your composition as a learning tool

ok guys, i am simply blown away by the quality of work here...and with such unbelievably talented ppl here like Dylan Cole(christ, i love your dvds :D) it was very intimidating indeed for me to post my work here.

i'm attaching a quick painting i did using a tablet at work. its my first ever attempt at a digital painting...done in phtoshop in an hour. its very rough...i didn't want to detail it...the purpose of the painting was to establish a mood, composition and tonal range.

i've never digitally painted anything ever before(am more technically oriented). heck, i've never even painted before so to say :) so, pls go easy on me!

all you guys here inspired me to even attempt to paint!

hey shiv,
don't be afraid to just plop opaque colors down don't worry about blending things at first just get your design and composition down. the rest will come in time

Hi Ray! Good to see your posts here. I do remember that last one ;-)

My fav is the third one--love the lighting and composition. I would recommend you make that as tight as the one from the class and you'll have a great piece.

Hi,
I just wanted to say thank-you to the webmasters and the community.
Last week, I wanted to inform me about pen tablets and hit this site at google and read me through the forum. One thread more interesting as the other. ;)

I’m a 19 years old student and live in northern-germany and please forgive me for my bad English.

Yesterday arrived me my wacom (graphire4) and I could start to draw.
This is my first picture – 2 h work.
With no clouds and a foreground, which have no details and looks crappy.
The next will be better, I hope.
