Here is a WIP for some steps down towards a man made cave formation.

Please give your thoughts on colours / composition etc.

Nice! I like that concept! Girlfriend happen to look and she thinks it's cool too. Can't wait to see it with photo reference!

For colors, I have nothing to say really. I like the orange highlights. That cyan water looks really good too.

I see a problem with light and composition.

First, I read the title was "Cave Entrance" but it was difficult to find where the cave entrance was. If you want the viewer's eyes come from left to right, I would suggest expand the light, put those mountains in the background, and make the cave entrance more important. You can play with the light to guide the viewer's eye to the entrance, also playing with more saturated colors there. These mountains in the background are cool but too important and distracting. For a while I thought the cave entrance was somewhere there.

If you want a good composition, create a point of light on upper left corner, so the light its the first thing to see when u see the work, and then add some movement playing with the light, so your eyes follow the light and goes to the right, and you notice there are some mountains but not too important (and your eyes don't stay there for a long time) and then go to the cave entrance, the most important thing, with more things to see there, maybe colors, details, etc.

Hope it helps.

Nice one! The colours really work for me; the combination of grey with green and turquoise and orange is great.

What about decorating the cave entrance with more details and colours (like the turquoise used on the left)? Just an idea. :)

Here is a more composed image;
Changed the colours, but any new observations, before I add details?

This is a very fine concept mate, you should definately work it up into a final mattepainting :)

all the best!

Hey there, I think its much better than previous concept because there is lot of details to look at and there is more depth too.

there both really nice concepts, but i like the second one a lot more the colours and composition work much better, and it leads the eye nicely through the pic how long till the next update?

Thanks for the replies, I will update it on Sunday - I like the second one too.
It just has more awe and wonder to it.

A little messy at the moment - I will be working it into a detailed painting, not a matte painting.

Very hard to find time to work on these personal bits;
Never feels like they are right.

Anyway, here is an update - later than I'd hoped.

Another update.
This is bad, I'm starting again.

Looks good, altough this latest is very green.
Do you have a clear direction for the painting, or are you making stuff up as you go along?

I'm just making it up as I go along. I feel a bit defeated by this image.
I'm chasing something in my head that I can never realise.
I think I should just start something new and stick this thing in the vault.

Something with photo refs and 3D models, I think that would cheer me up no end!
