Something I did for myself. I had done a lot of lava paintings but none with a city. Thought it might be fun and it was.
Original image was 4096 pixels wide and I did it over a few weeks in my spare time. I modeled the fore left building in Cinema 4D, yeah it sucks, I am just learning. I got impatient and textured it all in the painting in photoshop. Here is also a sketch and a detail.

Awesome
I like the way you create variety in buildings and brick the patterns.
How long did it take?

As for a city burning down in lava, I would have expected some fire, more red reflections and dark smoke too.

And I have to say that your works are inspiring …
Well done

As usual, you've outdone yourself Mr.Cole. I am a huge fan of your works.

My only critic is that the color of the lava is a bit off. It is usually a little more darker and redder than the one you've painted. But then, i could be wrong.

Thanks everyone, I appreciate it.

Homer- The city is not burning down, it was built around the lava, hence only light steam and no dark smoke and fire. That is also why the lava is fairly geometric in its placement. As to how long it took, I don't know, 40 hours maybe? I did it off an on for a while, so it is hard to judge.

smooth- thanks, I am really enjoying C4D, I just need time to learn it.

ecsdesign- yep, a bunch of sydney in there, I went there after working at weta and loved it. One of my favorite places. And no, I have no spare time now, though I am continuing to work on personal paintings for the d'artiste matte painting book.

wolf-thank you very much. Lava can look many different ways depending on how hot or cool it is. I was trying to find a medway point. Also there is a lot of atmosphere diffusingit.

boof- thanks, more news on DVD's soon, I promise. We are editing now.

slave- thanks, and that building bugs me too. It has to do with the fact that I modeled it in 3D and I suck at modeling. Here is what I started with-

Thanks again, everyone, it was a fun painting.

I am continuing to work on personal paintings for the d'artiste matte painting book.

OOoo nice. I am soo getting one of these. I've had the "Invisible Art" from Vaz & Barron" and I've been waiting for a contemporary one. I just hope It's done well - hardcover style and in-depth.

A really amazing piece!
It rocks as american said!

I'm really happy that you share your personal stuff with us!

The Matte Painting book from d'Artiste will be great!

From where have you begin your picture?
The foreground or the background?

This painting is so great.
it shows awesome depth perspective through the right amount of haze/smoke
into which the environment is able to melt perfectly.
