Hi guys,
I try to learn anything about matteapaintings and production techniques
but i cant find any tutorials about 2D or 2.5D projection,( myabe called multi plane) I am not sure, what is exactly name of this technique,
i want to use few planes in Maya, or maybe in Nuke later, to separate layers of painting, so if u know any links, advices or if u can recommend some dvds, about this technique, i would really appreciate that.. I have some 3D camera projection, but anything, about this multi planning, 2.5D
thanks in advanced

There are some good dvds from the workshop on camera projection techniques:

Thanks Space-sprayer, i ve got already most of them..and there is only 3D camera mapping or painting and mattepainting techniques, nothing about 2D multi planning. Any suggestions ?
thanks

I dont understand what it is that you are missing... If you want to do 3d camera projections where you break up a 2d matte painting into layers and project them onto 3d geometry, then there is everything you need there.
If you are talking about doing a completely 2d solution where you break a 2d matte painting up and just use the layers all as flat planes at different z-depths, then that can all be done in compositing software, and perhaps you are looking in the wrong place.
It all depends what exactly you need to do?

yes, what i want is completly 2D solution, break up layers into flat planes, i know can be done in Maya, or Nuke, or similar soft, Shake is no really good in multi planning, and what i lookin for is some tutorials..if is some,
or is so simple and easy just split it and attach each layer to different plane?
i ve never tried, so thats why i lookin for some tutors first
thanks again

Hello, don't know if what I say is relevant, but I just thing that you have to cut your MP into 3 different part at least : foreground, midground, background.
You can do it easily in photoshop, for instance.
Then, you import your different part into a compositing program.
If it's afx, you can import the psd. All your layers will be available to place in your comp.
then, add a camera, put the layers in 3d, and move them in the Z axis. That should work.
And, again, sorry if it's not relevant.
Gilles.

Yea if what you want is an entirely 2d solution using image planes then i would just do that in your compositing software. I use After Effects and do what Gilles said above. Although i usually do it a little more complex, and have different layers of clouds moving at different speeds etc too just to add a sense of realism.
As long as you export from photoshop with alphas this should be pretty easy and straight forward. You'll have to go and look for some tutorials for doing it in whatever comp package you are using tho.
