Hi all,

With 'D'artiste: Matte Painting 2' finally released I thought it's time for a long overdue website update as I've been neglecting things quiet a bit.

Here are a few pieces. More (including some concept work) on my site...

Been to your website. The concept artwork on there is just stunning! I absolutely love the painted sequence of Cain by candlelight for Diablo III. Cant stop studying it! Your ability to switch between different styles is phenomenal!

Hope you get more time to update regularly, coz this kind of work needs to be seen!

Cheers!

Excellent work. I especially like the content and palette of the second painting.

If I may make a constructive criticism of the night shot? The composition is great, but two things bother me. First, the moon is unrealistically large, which for some reason breaks immersion for me. And second, the light from the moon is not blue. It is a pale yellow. Ambient light at night may be a desaturated blue, but the direct light should be warm. Otherwise it seems like we are just looking through a filter.

Cheers Stefan, I'm quiet curious myself about the book.
Those Immortel images are pretty old, I'm happy you got something out if it.

Thank you RALawrence, glad you like it mostly. You do have some valid points there. Perhaps these images are better classified as animation-backgrounds rather than matte paintings since they were done for some of Blizzard's cinematics who are usually looking to push things strongly toward the fantasy realm (hence the large moon and distinct use of colors).

Nice work as always Chris. I can sometimes tell the work you've done without looking at the signature. A distinctive style I can't put my finger on it. It's a good thing. Gotta see your technique!
Looking forward to seeing the progress of some of those pieces in the book.
Cheers.

Hi Chris, i'd like to ask how you do those texture paintings, did you paint directly on top of the 3d model in photoshop? how do you actually work it out? thanks.

Very, very impressive indeed! I too would love to know more about your working methods, such as how long such detailed work takes, and what reference you use, etc.

Just great work!
