original scene

havent posted anything in a while so I thought i would put this up.

I revisited this shot I did a year ago after calibrating my monitor this weekend. a lot of my work ended up being very dark so I went about re adjusting a number of images I had online. I started playing around with this one and liked the changes I had made. Unfortunetely this is the resolution I was working at. It was originaly a completely 3d render but I reworked it a bit in 2D. in the composite there are particles animated for steam and video of a friend rotoscoped and keyframed to sit on the bike. If you are interested you can view the a low res version of the composite on my website.

I am still uncertain about how my monitor is calibrated so let me know if it looks overly bright/ dark etc. the original version is here http://www.brentoncottman.com/siteImages/mattes/AkiraAlleyRender.jpg

Nice work Brenton!

The image that's linked, definitely looks like its in a different gamma space, or like you said, done on a un-calibrated monitor. I'm glad you retouched this one, because it's really a nice location and mood you've established. I think the bike is integrated very well into the scene, but I'm unsure on the pillar of white in the background, as well as the strong blue light on the far street. Those are the main things that jump. The new pic looks great on this monitor, the only part really getting lost in blackness is the middle right wall between the fence and the street.

Hope that helps,

Patrick

hmm.
pillar of white? maybe my monitor is still off. there is supposed to be a large building showing between the two back buildings. mostly illuminated windows. perhaps it just doesnt read well. I tried to be as faithful to the original scene as possible.
thanks

Sorry I wasn't more specific. It does read as a building being more lit than the two in front of it. And I can see that you indicated fire escapes or porches on the back buildings. I was mainly refering to the composition, your eye goes back there, instead of on the nice bike and the foreground. That's all. Your corrections, as far as levels and such, are spot on, and it's a very nice image.

Hope that makes more sense.

Yeah, that area does distract from the subject a bit. I had a hard time legitimizing light sources while rendering. especially in the alleyway and on the bike. I didn't want it to look like daylight so I had fast falloff on the lights. It was difficult to get the bike to show up whereas with the street I could just put lights anywhere.

thank for clarifying.

I included the original scene above for comparison. you can see the bike has an unmotivated lightsource.
