A friend of mine who works as a pro matte painter just came home from London for a while and took some time to show a newb like me some tricks. We picked up one of my old projects and tried to take it closer to a finish. Here's before and after:

I remember you posting the old version a while back, and this version is a massive improvement! Whoever was giving you the advice certainly pushed you in the right direction! Although this is a looser finish, if you take a step back it looks very realistic. Kind of akin to traditional oil mattes.
Nice stuff anyway.

Yeah I haven't finalized it. The highlights are going to be a little refined. Someone told me that the sun was too big as well... what do you think? I kinda liked it the way it was.

No problem :)
Sun looks ok to me, it doesnt strike me as being out of place at that size. One thing i might suggest tho is that you get rid of some of the texture in the gorge underneath where the sun is. I just dont think we would see all that detail in there. The bloom from the sun would obliterate a lot of it. so i would just dust some of the shadow colour upwards to get rid of the texture there, particularly the further down you go into the canyon.
Are we allowed to ask who was giving you the advice?
