Hey guys...this is my first time posting as well as my first attempt at a matte painting. Please comment as I'm looking to learn as much as possible. Thanks!

Looks like you've done a pretty ncie job on this! One thing that stands out is that the hills on the right have had their scale increased. I think its because they look wet very high up, which makes sense in the ref because even high up is still close to the sea level, but at the scale you have made them, the sea doesnt look like it should be getting the rocks that slick that igh up. I hope that makes sense...
Also, lose the birds, they arent necessary and its obvious they are clones that have been moved around.

Other than that this looks like a nice job, so congrats! Im not completely sold on the lighting of the lighthouse, but its still pretty good, so i wouldnt worry too much about that.

Keep it up, look forward to seeing more from you. Welcome to the boards too!

The perspective of the lighthouse is a little off since it's relation to the horizon has changed. Try bringing the lighthouse to the same height above the horizon as it is in the original and your comp will look more natural.

I agree with previous posters. If there were to be birds in the shot, they would be moving and therefore not in the matte. Pretty nice composition though. Something I noticed is that there's some edge on the wall on the lower parts of the lighthouse which lines up perfectly with the horizon line. You should change that. So far, a good first attempt! :)

Better, but the light on the lighthouse is all wrong. If it is a cylindrical form and the light is from the sun you should expect to see a vrtually straight, vertical border between top and bottom. The way you have the light suggests an hour glass type shape.

I think the shadow on the lighthouse and the rocks below is overdone, its too black. We should be able to see more detail in their shadow than the rocks far away to the right which will be subject to greater amounts of aerial perspective. The nearer shadows would be darker, but not so dark that we lose the detail. Maybe have a look at the contrast?

Here's another update...I thought about adding the clouds to the right and just decided to give it a shot...what do ya think?
