i've started getting interested in matte painting, so i'm doing a few things to see if i can get lighting and colours kinda right.

comments and crits are very welcome. off-hand i think the buildings on the left side are too hazy + their outlines in general are too sharp. the left side of the middle-ground to foreground seems a bit too hazy as well (?)

Great job on this painting. I agree with you about the edges of the buildings, maybe they could get a bit softer, especially on the right side where you start to add the pinkish color to them. Overall, if you give it the squint test, it looks pretty real. I think you did a great job on the lighting, but don't take away too much haze (if any), it keeps the image moody and beautiful. Maybe next time you could post the original photo right above the painting, that way we can bounce back and forth to study and admire what you've done (just a habit for me).

This looks great.

Looking at the full size image it's intersting to see just how simple the strokes are.

Thanks for the comments. It's encouraging to get positive feedback from people who know what they're doing, as well as seeing ILM professionals active on boards such as this! I'm quite enjoying this matte painting stuff, so maybe for the next one I'll try out something with a bit more of a powerful lightsource or a daytime shot.

Seems like there are some good resources on this board as well, I'll be sure to check'em out! =)
