Although a more illustrative piece than a matte painting, the use of a few photographs as a starting point helped give the lighting and rendering a more realistic quality. (I apologize if you've seen this on CGTalk. Please enjoy if you haven't

And as requested in one of the discussions, this painting was a very quick study to copy a photograph from a book resting next to my monitor. I can definitely see how these studies help...so more are definitely coming.

Another less refined study from a different book:

And lastly, a sketch in progress. The building in the center is horribly blocked in. I'll be addressing that soon, as well as loosening up some elements and tightening the more important ones. I'll post an update soon.

Enjoy! And have a good one!

nice work jensen.
saw your painting on cgtalk. good job. nice sketches too. watch out for the shadow colors and your black levels. they will kill your atmosphere.

The top image reminds me of the end sequence in half life2.
I love the second sketch of the trees above the coast.
Colours are awesome on my monitor.
Well done.
I wish I knew how to post my own images, actually I do know,
I just don't have a web-site to upload from/lol

One question, who do you work for?

"I'm in the market", actually. I'll be graduating from Ringling School of Art and Design this May. We're finishing up our senior thesis at the moment, which is a one to two minute animated short.

Here's an example of what the renders are looking like. Since there's not enough time to figure out how to light and texture a glacier, all the shots are going to be matte paintings with the characters comped in. Not done with these yet, but it's headed in the right direction.

Entitled "Cold Feet", it's a piece about a penguin who can't find the courage to jump from this spot like the other penguins do.

Just finished this one. Painted over modeled geometry. I'm lighting the characters to match next:

The whole thing will be done around April 1.

Thanks again for the comments! Have a good one,

- Patrick

Looking pretty sick, I dont think you will struggle to find work on graduation!

Will the short appear online once its finished?
