So to mark my 1000th post on this forum, i thought id start a sketchbook thread to post my doodles from this point on. Ill post stuff from quick thumbnails, sketches and concepts, and discarded matte paintings. Hope you enjoy, ill kick it off with a few recent(ish) pieces. Some are a bit more rendered than others, but these are all around 2 hour pieces, all in PS.
Hope you enjoy the thread. Ill be really busy with uni work again as of late September, but ill try and keep my posts here relatively frequent. Its all good practice. Im looking into getting a Nintendo DS at some point too so i can do some sketches on there and will post those along with the process... we'll see, but its part of the master plan...

Thanks for the comments guys, much appreciated!
Havent updated in the last few days because ive been workin on some projection stuff, but found the time to do this quick (maybe 15 minute?) sketch in PS last night. No refs, just went in with some really loose strokes until i saw something start to emerge, and then ran with it.
Ill try and update with some gouache sketches tomorrow or Tuesday when i can take some photos.

mrMSK - Thanks!
So here is a quick bit of perspective practice. I wasnt too happy with that last sketch because of the bad perspective among other things, so i decided to just do a bit of perspective and lighting practice. The idea of the satellite is pretty loose just to add a bit of a story element to the study. Before anyone mentions it, i know there is no atmosphere in space ;)

Beautiful work as usual, Nick. Looking at your speedies makes me disgusted with mine and really makes me want to do more! I've got a Nintendo DS just so I can paint on it and I've got to tell you, it is so much fun! I definitely suggest you get one!

Jessi - Thanks for the comments, much appreciated! Yea the DS is seeming more and more likely, ive been having a look at proces on the net the last few days and im pretty sur eim gonna go for it. I hate missing out on those perfect moments when i dont have a sketchbook at hand!
Anyway, here are a few traditional pieces that ive done recently whilst on my holiday to the Greek island of Crete. Its a beautiful place, and so i did a sketch a day whilst i was there. Some had to be done very quickly in about 20 - 30 mins whilst i was on the move, and some i sat and spent a bit longer on, like about 3 hours for the last one here. I might upload some more, but the photo quality wasn't coming out great and some of the colour is lost, so ill just upload these for now...
These are just small, i guess around 5 inches. I left my Wacom pen in the first one to show the scale.

Nice sketches.I like your traditional Painting works.

08-21-2008, 02:49 PM
A quick thumbnailing session. Bout 15 mins each, most of the time spent painting over what id already done coz i couldnt get any decent compositions... Anyways, not completely happy with them, exept the top left on which i quite like and might do a proper concept of, but i guess thats why these are just thumbs, so i can work that kinda stuff out before wasting loads of time :)
Cheers for the kind words everyone, it means a lot! Ill try and update next week, but i am goin to be working on a project that will take up most of my time...

hey enchantedfugue!! Havent seen you around these parts in a while, good to see you back! You gonna hit us with some new work soon?
Anyways, i did a quick speedpainting / concept of the first thumb that i posted before:
http://pic4.picturetrail.com/VOL762/3253510/19178467/331237963.jpg
Now that i look back to the thumbnails, the bottom right seems more appealing to me, so maybe i should have left them and decided when id had some time away from them... ah well, never mind, i can always do both :)

Hey Nick - nice work. Your stuff is really improving, which is always great to see.
You're relying quite a bit on backlighting in your paintings, though (particularly the ones from imagination). Careful you don't get into a rut there - it looks really pretty, but it's kind of rare in reality. The nicest sketch is probably the harbor - it's not single point perspective, it's not backlit, and the elements aren't all parallel - so it's a lot more sophisticated than some of the others.
When does your 3rd year kick off? Have you got everything sorted out?
Take care
AJ
nickmarshallvfx
08-22-2008, 10:13 AM
Hey Alex!
Thanks mate, glad you can see some improvements. You are right about the backlighting, it does give a really nice luminous quality but looking back i have been using it a bit too often. It seems to become the default when not working from reference unless for a specific purpose, so ill try and vary it up more in the next set.
I decided to go straight into my third year and forgo the year in industry. At this stage i just want to get my degree finished up so that i can get out there and look for work properly. I have a major project to do for this final year (starting in late Sept) so im basing it heavily around 3d matte paintings to try and have some solid demoreel shots come next April / June time.
Good to hear from you mate! Hope things are well at Rushes!

Miguelslo - Im a big believer in pencil and paper, hope to see you getting back into it soon :)
Here is todays sketch. I took this a bit further actually, so id probably call this a concept, its a bit more refined. I almost gave up on this one quite early, but i like to work thru my issues coz u learn more from it IMO, and in the end spent more time refining it than i normally would. Its not great, a little overtextured and not enough time spent on really defining the clear shapes. Still, i quite like it (for now, lol)

Here are a few more traditional sketches:
These first two were done a few months ago, the second one is only partially finished, but ive not got too much time on my hands to finish it up so ill leave it as is. Bout an hour spent on each, first is gouache, second is watercolour and gouache, both on watercolour paper:

http://pic4.picturetrail.com/VOL762/3253510/19178467/333850686.jpg
This last one i just did earlier this afternoon. About 45 minutes. Gouache in watercolour sketchbook:
http://pic4.picturetrail.com/VOL762/3253510/19178467/333850386.jpg
These are pretty close to the actual size painted at, except the second which was painted a bit larger... maybe 14" wide...

09-12-2008, 05:19 AM
Chris - Thanks mate!! :)
Seeing as the traditionals seem to be going down well, here is another from a couple of days ago. Gouache on Watercolour paper, original size is about 14" x 7". This one is based on some photography i took at the Tomb of the Kings in Cypus last year. Really makes me appreciate the genius of the traditional matte artists when i attempt this sort of thing...
Hope you like.
http://pic4.picturetrail.com/VOL762/3253510/19178467/334200530.jpg

Cheers for the support everyone!

The other traditional painting. Again gouache on watercolour paper, a little bigger this time, about 15" x 14". I call it 'Bad Composition':
http://pic4.picturetrail.com/VOL762/3253510/19178467/334274391.jpg

Been really busy with projects at uni at the moment, but found a little bit of time to do this quick entry for the Environment of the Week challenge over at ca.org
Had to find something to distract me from the work i was meant to be doing ;) lol
Anyway, the theme was 'Unicorn Valley'. Didnt go metaphorical with this one, just kept it straight forward. Had to rush it a bit, but thats just the way it goes. Experimenting with a square aspect ratio and trying to get my brushes to feel more traditional.
Plus of course always trying to work on lighting...

Thanks HazyWay! The unicorn valley piece ended up as the joint winner of the challenge. Was pleased to get my place in the winners book :)

http://pic4.picturetrail.com/VOL762/3253510/19178467/344801612.jpg
Im gonna take this piece now and start working it into a matte that will have a fairly extensive camera move added to it (3d projection) and a few animated elements, including a big bank of 3d trees (using Vue) that the camera flies over before revealing this matte.
I dont know how long the whole shot will take, but i may put some progress shots here or in the WIP section at some point.

You really have some great PS brushes. It makes me want to spend a lot of time playing around and creating my own brushes. I like your gouache paintings. Brandon - Thanks for dropping by mate! Hope things are going well with you at Frantic!
proconpictures - Thank you. Ill make sure i keep doing the sketches and keep pushing to improve!
kuroe702 - Thanks! Yes i do have a whole bunch of custom brushes. In fact, the only default brushes i have left are the hard round, soft round and chalk brushes. I can give credit to Daniel Kvasznicza for the majority of my brushes. His freely downloadable set on his website (http://www.inetgrafx.com/frontend/) are my staple tools.
thirteen - Thanks mate! Im pretty new to gouache too, the paintings you see in here are my first foray into gouache. My best advice is to get a decent brand like Windsor and Newton, get a dozen colours that you think are a good pallette, and just start experimenting. Copy photos until you get more confident handling the paint. They are great practice, i learn more every time i do one!
nigel.wagner - Much appreciated Nigel, im watching your sketchbook carefully for inspiration too!
Thanks for all the support that you guys give, its really motivating! Im always happy to hear and critique too, so dont keep quiet if you spot some bad mistakes!
Here is my first chance to sketch since it turned 2009. Im working on some heavy projection mattes right now so im not getting much chance to sketch, but ill keep trying to update:

i really love the way you are able to put so much depth and atmosphere into such quick sketches. As I have no traditional art training this can be a real challenge for me at times. do you have any advice for me?
nickmarshallvfx
01-21-2009, 03:55 AM
lukedesmith - getting good depth into the painting is all about studying nature and seeing just how depth is created. What you will find is that distant object get brighter, less contrasty, and pick up a lot of the colour of the atmosphere. Usually the foreground is more saturated than the background too, but in that last one the background stuff is pretty heavily saturated. Thats why its so important to study nature. Knowing the rules is good, but by studying nature you learn when to break the rules too, which can sometimes bethe difference between an decent painting and a great painting.
Constant practice will get you where you want to be. I still have my first sketch from only 3 years ago somewhere on my comp, and it looks horrible, but ill try and post it up later if i can find it. It shows how far practice can get you.

Sorry for the lack of updates, ive been really really busy. Will have more stuff to show sometime soon, but not until i can get permission.
In the meantime, here is a really quick sketch that i managed to get done last night for a friends animated short. He wanted some different lighting ideas, so i went for a neon lit scene. Was fun, as i havent done anything like that before. Its really loose and still needs a lot of work, but i dont have any more time to spend on it, so i thought id share it as it is...

Here are a couple of sketches i managed to squeeze in this week. First one very quick, second a little longer, maybe 45 minutes and 1.5 hours. Second one based loosely on photoref and inspired by Seung Ho Henrik.

I think Henrik's website is a must see, so go here to see his awesome work (http://www.seunghohenrik.com) I brulatised his gorgeous style somewhat but his paintings are gorgeous and need to be seen!
Should have some more updates soon.

Nice works Nick!
You should add a little detail with fine brush to get a focal point on the last one.
Anyway Seung Ho Henrik Holmberg are really amazing.
thanks the link.

Thanks kbarts! You are right, that did need a bit of finer detailing on that one. Detail is one thing that im struggling with at the moment in my sketches. Too much, too little. Making progress though :)
theuni - Thanks man!
A few thumbnail studies from photo ref and a new sketch from imagination:

Of all the mattepainters that have come through this forum, (including myself, Riktor, Rockhopper, And RQuack) I see the most promise and the fastest progression to professional level in Nick Marshall. Cheers mate.

Wow thanks Matt! I really appreciate the kind words, im glad you think the work has been paying off! I have been in the fortunate position of being able to spend a lot of time working on my matte painting and environment design skills over the past few years due to being on a vfx degree. Not a luxury that many have.
I look forward to the day where all of us are in pro vfx studios, and are all posting here to share professional mattes!
I have been following your blog too, keep that up, its really interesting to see your journey!
Thanks again man!
