Hi,
wacom for sure. I've started with a 100 euros A6 graphire. I still use it at home. In spite of its small size (can you imagine? one inch on monitor was a microbe on tablet), have a good sensitivity and a good response on every clic.
Now at work i am working with a 500 euros intuos A4wide. No money were spent better.

There's no graphire anymore, now you can buy wacom bamboos.
Never buy a Trust or similar. They're useless toys.
bye

My suggestion is to start with something cheap like a Graphire and/or Bamboo 'if' you're not sure. However most people that go to a tablet either will hate it or will truly love it. If you're serious about your graphics then invest in an Intuos.

When I was in college I invested some of my tuition money on a Wacom Intuos 2. It's been almost 5 years and it's still with me.

Here are a few tips for buying a tablet. Note that I will only speak for Wacom since those are the ones I've had experience with.

#1: Professional or Amateur Pad - There are three fundamental levels of Wacom Tablets.. the Graphire/Bamboo (starter/mobile pads), Intuos (professional/semi mobile), Cintiq (professional/non mobile). Each one with varying costs, with the Cintiq being the most expensive. If you've done your research you will also know that the Cintiq is the only one with a graphically visible screen that you draw on.

The Intuos is almost double the price of the Graphire/Bamboo, however the level of touch sensitivity changes as well as the sizes you can buy them at. I have had my time with both and I have to tell you that the Intuos is a far superior pad in terms of control and overall build. The Graphire/Bamboo is lighter but seems a little flimsy. I carry my tablet from work to home so it takes it's fair share of accidental bumps with anything I run into.

#2: Size - I won't get much into the argument about what is safer in the longterm. However some people like to draw pivoting at the elbow and some with their wrists. Pick the pad that fits the way that YOU draw.

#3: Type of Work - If you work with print or anything that doesn't require meticulous pixel by pixel sensitivity then a Graphire/Bamboo will work out for you. Our graphic designer here ended up getting one and she has no problems with it. If you work with something that requires more gestural and/or precision then Intuos is the right way to go.

Tablets no matter HOW expensive has a learning curve. The BIGGEST learning curve you will have to learn how to draw with your hand without looking at it (remember back in high school art where they made you do those blind contour drawings?.. they weren't in vain). Even the big mean Cintiq has a learning curve because it will initially NOT feel like paper, canvas and/or familiar medias. It will literally feel like you're drawing on plastic.

I know this probably didn't help you narrow down, but it is important to think about what tablet is right for you. Every artist is unique, just like everyone else ;)

I Just tried "Bamboo" and it's great. it's easier to handle small details. (specially if you work with short strokes)
