In answer to smooth's post, here is a link to a few mattes I did. Iwas barely involved for a few weeks, basically helping out Robert Stromberg.
It was fun to do this Shangri-La painting. They wanted Rivendell meets Theed with an asian bent to it. Pretty fun. I went over the top with the lighting, I was thinking about Bierstadt when I did it. I was a little dissapointed with the way it looked in the final film. I was fine with the desaturation, but it felt too milky for me.
Then I just did a couple quick ice cave paintings.

Great work man. I agree with your comment on the desaturation of the shots. I had liked that look until I saw this movie and realized that it was too much, and hard on the eye. But yeah, awsom stuff.

Hey Dylan,

Paintings look great. Really dig the ice caverns. The luminance, light play and vivid blues are great. Top notch stuff again!!

Any chance of you giving us insight on how you go about creating vegetation in your work would be greatly appreciated! single pixel brush kinda guy...or preset scatter brush kinda guy? better yet..clone from photo source kinda guy?
Man I can't wait for your dvd's. ( you can refrain from responding to that part ;) )
I was wondering what your first few matte's looked like...and the progress you've made.

Nice work. Could you post a high res image of your Shangri-La painting?

I second that.

Thanks everyone glad you like it.
smooth-vegetation is photo as much as possible and then I paint in specific detail and blends. I also love the scatter brushes.

Chris-Here you go, I didn't feel comfortable posting the whole painting at full res, but here are a few sections. Love your work, by the way.

On the details, you never saw this close because I paint at 4k and only 2k is seen. You can see there are some rough edges and a bit of sloppiness here and there. When you look at this at half the res, everything comes together nicely.

holy shit...I didn't think you would post close ups. So I didn't ask.
I wouldn't feel comfortable posting a full version either. No problem there.
Man this is really nice. There's nothing like Creating visuals from a blank canvas. Close to God as a creator some say.
Thanks for posting Dylan. And thanks for being so active a member.
I hope to see more closeups on your dvd's. A psd would be nice too!
Really excited about it.
Money well spent. :)
Speaking of which...whatever they pay you... It isn't enough! lol

This is glorious.

The high res comps that you say have "rough edges and a bit of sloppiness here and there" are absolutely invaluable to see for the beginning matte artist. Those little areas where the technique is revealed go so far in helping identify approaches to our own work.

Thanks for posting!

As a side note, it's interesting how in the "good ole days" of glass paintings, the impressionistic stroke softened on film to look real. But now, in the digital realm, it's reversed - where painting at twice the final resolution and photo sharp down to the tiniest detail is needed to make a shot read as real by the time it hits celluloid. Funny how things change... but the images still make us marvel...

A really good work!
Thank you Dylan to share all your works with us.

There are few things which miss precision into large, but the unit is superb.

Thx for your post and thx for your amazing pictures in Mattepainting d'artiste !!

dude grab the dylan cole dvds from gnomon, the board is very helpful, but
most of these guys are pros, and working, asking everybody to explain the whole process step by step, isn't gonna happen. Check out the tutorial and resources section too. :) good luck.

get those DVDs :D
