what a quality job you did here!
nice

I was wondering, is this shot done with this technique? http://mattepainting.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=109

Could you give us some insights ? like how to handle the smoke etc? Diffrent layer ? Or is it a movie mapped on the inside of a sphere?

Thanks for the comments,
It uses a s simple technique by placing the mattepainting as one 3d layer in After-effect.

Here are the steps:
- Basic matte painting (rough sketch as place holder) using the last frame of the footage

- Importing camera movement from boujou and keeping the real footage as 2D element

- Roto the real plate to make room for the mattepainting

- For the mattepainting itself,
first I drew a simple road, then I added the houses starting from back,
(at this time I had an adjustment layer on top of the layers to de-saturate everything.
This way the color differences didn’t interfere with finding the composition)
After finding the right composition, I started to match the colors and add some atmosphere and fog.

- Importing the mattepainting as 3D layer and place it next to the plate in the last frame

- Then adding layers of practical smoke with mask
And I used a copy of the same people from the real plate with time offset in the back, to populate the village.

The trick in 180 degree pan, is to keep the matte painting only in the last or the first 90 degree of the pan only,
this way the distortion is very easy to handle.

It looks great,
but there is something strange about the wind wheel…

I’m glad we did remove the wind wheel in the final matte painting.
