Zboo's challenge is winding down (I think) and I figure its time to pop the question... what do we do next. Im leaning on the side of set extension, but Im a big fan of how everlites history musuem panned out on cgtalk and that a section was made for 3d stuff. I really would like to try out stuff with plate photography.

What about some invisible work. I'll see if the studio can provide a decent plate, can't guarantee, but invisible work is a pretty good challenge, rather than another fantasy situation.

Ive got a plate that I found in the Nuke tutorial kit when you download from the foundry it looks like a good set extension opportunity. But if you can get a real plate I would be happy... especialy if its moving

I have found 2 potential candidates for extension/removal projection whatever.
HD footage of a demolition site we shot. Each shot is hand held so some tracking is needed but they are both open to invisible or even fantasy work.. They look boring but thats a challenge isn't it?
You could even paint the guys out of the second plate and totally change it..

Can we do both? I'd like to do one but I'm not keen on doing invisible stuff on my days off work. A bit of the fantastic is required to keep me up late at night.
What about a subtle approach, make something in the shot unbelievable but keep it looking realistic.
I will be posting my work for this one, but I'm behind a firewall at a games company also very busy all the time and don't have the internet at home - yet...

I am game for the second image as well...the first image could use a sky replacement and maybe a large skyscraper behind it but otherwise there's not alot to do with it.
I'm going to just do a painting of the first image but if you could also post a 4 second clip of the first shot that would be great for everyone who is trying to learn tracking, rotoscope, and compositing. (DANG I WISH I HAD SHAKE AND PFMATCH)
I think the challenge should be very clear on the fact that this needs to be a totally invisible shot and you shouldn't be able to tell that the other elements don't actually exist.

I'd do this. Invisible work though. Are these plates moving footage? Alot of challenges work from still but matte work usually involves working from a footage plate. I would love to do that.

OK.. seems like you're all in for this. Both plates are moving ( handheld).
My parents are here for the weekend so I'll pick this up next week, and sort the footage out..
The first shot actually pans down to reveal a derelict site with moving diggers and stuff.
All the best

i really like the idea of these informal challenges. There is so much to be learned from each other on these.

I like the second one as well. I think this is a very good exercise to test your skills as a matte painter. Getting a plate like this to work from has a lot of potential. Not to mention it is a typical shot a director would like you to spice up.
Lets do it!

Im up for moving plates if possible but a still is fine for me, I say if we can make it available for those who have the tools to play around with it. I can also offer Boujou track of whatever shot we do in whatever 3d app or compositor it supports. I think this piece is a good shot to put on a reel.

I have steadied the plates, and will matchmove them for camera data.
They are both in tiff sequences, but quite large. I can put them somewhere to download soon but I'll make the first and last frame available first, that way people can get started and work on a moving plate after.
If everyone is still up for this I can post them, along with a few simple requirements that will add an extra challenge and direction.
Nice idea Cliff, not sure I have the time personally.

Even though I am quite busy with a few different projects, I love the plates and I will try and get something done.

Sorry Brandon Kachel, but you're exempt from the challenge. You can't compete.
CUZ YOUR INVISIBLE STUFF IS TOO DAMN GOOD. :D
j/k. you can compete of course. Can't wait to see what you come up with.
Btw... I started working on this the first day and will post my progress when I am back from vacation on Tuesday.
Justin, I actually suggest that you just post the raw tiff files somewhere that aren't even steadied. I think it would be good for alot of us to get some experience with steadying, tracking, and color grading.
Maybe we can pool money together via paypal to buy a prize for best work?
