Hello MP.org; l o n g time no post - I just seem to get busier and busier! Here are some web screen grabs of shots with some of my matte painting work from the I am Legend trailer that came out a few weeks ago:

In the first shot, the camera booms up above the entrance to the flooded tunnel; I projected weeds and cracks onto the streets, grime & weeds on the walls (especially along the waterline), and the traffic signs.

The second shot is a lock-off: I added weeds & cracks to the road (in and around the vehicles), grunged up a bunch of signs & buildings, and painted a shaft of light towards the end of the street - this was a lighting que I suggested that would reinforce the shaft of light cutting across the gas station, which already existed in the plate.

In the third shot, the camera pans down off the "re-worked" New York skyline (you could barely make out the Chrysler building in the original photography), and added a bunch of weeds in between the automobiles.

Don't know if these shots will look anything like the way they appear here in the trailer. Had to rush through all of these at a frenzied pace. It's the way things go sometimes; it seems like the movie trailer has become a production onto itself, and many times you won't even see the trailer shots in the final movie!

Anyhow, just thought I'd share. You won't see too many updates from me for awhile. It's become increasingly impossible to post work samples on the web these days, even on one's own site for portfolio purposes. Perhaps, in the not so distant future, I'll only have detailed descriptions on my site, with no pictures. Maybe something like, "Here's a matte painting I did at ILM - imagine there's this big ark, like Noah's ark, but the filmmakers only built part of it physically ...."

Hi Thomas..that's a shame about posting work!

I have been waiting for this film for a while, not sure about the casting. I reckon a Nic Nolte (Hulk - the father) would have been a better Neville, for those of you that have read the book I'm sure you'd agree. Will Smith? the mind boggles.

Anyhow these are great. I scrutinised the whole trailer when it came out. It's great stuff, suprisingly simple and painterly in places. In some areas when paused, particularly the overhead of the car racing down the street (which must be CG), the weeds are just simply scribbles in some places but it works well at speed..

Did you have to add the water in the first shot or was that a seperate element?

Nice work..thanks for sharing, I'll speak to ILM about the situation

LOL
too funny Thomas. I feel ya though. I won't be able to post anything until...ohh...2011. LOL

Nice matte paintings, near impossible to post before shots so I won't ask.
&
Nice ark btw. ;)

Perhaps in the future we should create a society for matte painters of some kind with a secret language and codes. LOL

Actually what you can do is create a website (anonymous) and post screen shots and create a post here that goes something like...posted here on someone elses website is a shot I worked on blablablab.. so technically they can't prove it's you that posted it. ;) Which it wasn't it was someone else...that other guy u know... :)

Wow, i finally just got to see this trailer, and the VFX work on the film looks great! Lovely mattes. Im gonna go back and scrutinize the trailer now and see if i can pick up some of the painterly areas that Justin mentioned.

Lovely work!

Posting your own images from work is a nightmare, I have been told that all the photos I take at work the copyright is owned by the organisation. I have to pay 50 GBP for each phot that i post on my website or print for my portfolio the license only covers me for two years. I cannot show anyone on this website my best photos from work without having to pay for it. I am the one who has put myself in harms way/freezing/hot conditions waiting for days and planning that has gone into each shoot. Which is why I feel for you, you do all this fantastic work but are unable to show it, I have the same problem.

I have watched the trailer and I could not spot the join, you have performed a miracle,

Regards and respect

Rich.
