Realy? I think its great there's none ...way too often they alter the essence of a story whit a sequel... but i would say yes to another movie about a book of Philip k dick... because Paycheck and A scanner darkly were not very good.. minority report was not bad but not as good as Blade runner

did you read "Les machines a illusion" french title dont know in english

that could do a great movie i think..

Yeah, totally know what you mean about sequels. They can end up ruining a good film so I suppose it may be a good thing they did not make one after all.

Unfortunately I don't get time to read any book other than about graphics and flash design ;).

I wish I did as my mrs reads loads and is always telling me about all the good story's she comes accross that would make a great film conversion.

Take care m8 and speak soon,

Jay

mm blade runner is a cult and i just dont think some movies should have a sequel. if so then the director and scriptwriter has to be top notch! like james cameron that did T2 and Aliens....

though now a days they fill it with effects with a super tight schedule and hope for box office suckess...

even though i work with effects for movies and want to have work in the future i would love to have some movies with less in your face visuals..

anyhow it doesnt say when the dvds are coming out!

Tooootaly agree!! for me Aliens was the best sequel for a sci-fi movie ...T2 not bad too

Anyway there is no possible sequel possible for blade runner.. all nexus 6 died...yeah i know dekkerd and rachel were also nexus 6 but they were special...since PkD didnt wrote a any sequel then that end of it ...

About the dvds ...they will be available in the fall 2007 i read on other web news

cheers!

Yeah, I also agree one of the best sequels (apart from "empire strikes back of course") was Aliens. Superb in every way and to this day I can watch it almost any time of the day.

T2 was also good, shame about the dire 3rd one though! Hopefully the Transformers sequel will rock too though!

Aliens blew me away when i saw it when i was about 8! Awesome movie!

Gotta get hold of blade runner this time round i love this film. But does anyone find it abit strange all these reworks of films. Its fair enough restoring it. But i'm abit dubious about redoing visual fx (tho theres alot of good ones you never see in the new star wars stuff) for films. I even heard somewhere that some directors reshooting parts of the movie for the rerelease (not sure if its blade runner). To me that sounds abit over the top

Some parts of me are just like, this movies been made let it rest. But still i guess its the directors vision that your watching so if its not what he cpmpletely intended then maybe its fair enough to let them have another go at it.

Dunno if you heard but oliver stone has done another rerelease of alexander, apparently over 3 and a half hours now and still bad! LOL

Yea i agree, im always a bit dubious about reworking a film too. Bladerunner was a fantastic film, and in the 80's it was way up there, but i think to try and rework it now and release it as a new film might rob it of its legendary status.

bladerunner is getting a facelift ive hered but if you think about it its kinda sad for us vfx people becuase they kinda dishonour us when they change the fx at least i would feel that way if i had worked on that one and they decide to change it because it doesnt cut todays standard..

i love the FX for BR its made in a really stressed pace during production and still turned out spectacular. oh well im just waiting for the box to come out!!!

Yea it must be very hard for the guys who spent all that time back then to have their work taken out for a rerelease...
Especially when their hard work was part of what made the original film so special...

I thought they were adding stuff in not taking it out, new scenes and that. There was talk ages ago about enhancing the matte and fx work, but so much of it holds up extremely well even by todays standards.

I doubt that Ridley Scott would be happy taking stuff out like that, well I hope he wouldn't. Maybe enhance a few scenes but he usually respects the art dept too much on his films to do something like that.

Or maybe he's gone all George Lucas on it's ass!

The only beef I remember him having with the original was Harrison's voiceover. Added on the producers say so for the american audience because they thought they wouldn't get it!

They could re-shoot the dove shot at the end perhaps.

Still it's mine and mi missus favourite movie..

I first heard about this special edition in 2002. Charlie de Lauzirika (Scott's
DVD producer) is a friend of a friend, so for fun I started messing around
with one of my favorite matte shots from the film. I didn't really like the
idea of redoing the FX work (which should have won the Oscar) but I thought
if someone was going to do it, it might as well be someone who loved
the original work. (Or better yet, have Rocco Gioffre and Michelle Moen do it,
since they both worked on the original matte paintings in 1982).
Anyway, I did this sketch-

http://img408.imageshack.us/img408/8640/581ta8.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

I showed it to Charlie, who showed it to Ridley, and the response was "Ridley
isn't interested in redoing any of the famous FX shots. He wants to use digital
FX to fix editorial issues (redubbed dialogue that was clearly out-of-sync) and
to fix things like the obviously male stunt double for Zhora in her death scene".
So there you have it. The FX from 1982 will still be there. But other things
will be tweaked and improved. Oh yeah, the dove shot will be fixed.
(I always thought the clear blue sky in that shot was on purpose and rather
artsy, but apparently it was a mistake. Go figure.)

Wows thats really cool Rick, thanks for sharing!
Its good to hear that there wont be any messing with the original fx work. I think that could have started a bad view of how dispensible VFX artists are. Good to hear Ridley Scott is not going to do that. Makes me proud to be studing for my VFX degree in his home town ;)

I know it's blasphemy to say this, but I kind of liked the original version from 1982 with Deckard's voice-over. It reminded me of Magnum, PI and MacGyver a little bit. Two of my favorite shows back then  I like when you can hear the character's thoughts because it's almost like they're talking directly to you. It kind of adds a dimension of interactivity.
I also liked the re-release in 92 cause it really made you think about the story.

Really? Not me. I disliked the narration on first viewing, and grew to hate it on subsequent viewings.
My favorite version of the movie is the 1982 rough cut. I was thrilled to hear this is going to be included with the 5 disc edition. That alone makes it worth buying.

well this naration is really bad because Ford didnt like the idea but if he would put some soul into it it could be better..

btw thought i would post a behind the scenes thing for you who havent seen it

and here is the trailer for the final cut

You're right enchantedfugue that is total blasphemy.

I'm not sure you can be forgiven for that. You'd better put some pretty smart work up in your next post! :P

Especially when using Magnum PI, and McGyver as a comparision. I wouldn't even use them in the same sentence.

So how many versions of this film are there now? I don't even know which one i seen - it was a while back.

Will the new dvd have em all or just one final (possibly) version?

lol, Justin you are right, that would be cool, coz i know i personally am not doing anything with my days at the moment other than practicing my matte painting skills (i finished at uni for the year until October), so it would be cool to do that.

Blimey in my day they never had such things, just the animation course at Bournemouth and Poole. I plumped for illustration at Harrow that's how I ended up here in London. eeeee How times change.

nickmarshallvfx
08-09-2007, 04:50 PM
Well the animation courses at Bournemouth are still considered the best at the moment I think. Teesside are doing their best to close the gap though. 3D World magazine did a review of the bewst UK animation courses and Bournemouth was 1st with Teesside 2nd, but Bournemouth don't (or didn't) offer a visual effects course, so it was an easy choice for me :)
I really wanted to get involved with compositing and effects animation with my main interest being matte painting, whereas I think Bournemouth is best known for character animation and 3D work. Plus I knew that Teesside focuses a lot on art and not just technicals, so that would keep me doing what I love best :)

Recently loads more universities have jumped on the animation bandwagon, but the majority of courses are still in their infancy. I feel very lucky to be able to go into university and study exactly the sort of things I want though where probably as little as 2 or 3 years ago I would not have been able to. More competition tho, so you have to stay sharp ;)
