hey guys i have landed myself in a new problem these days.

i have a 21 inc dell make lcd monitor ;
the problem is when i am painting or say color correcting i get color banding problem, i know this happens when the monitor cannot handle accurate colour presentation.this problem also occurs when i open a new 16 bit document in photoshop and just apply a simple color gradient .
the other problem is when i do some heavy color correction say a day for night shot i get color clipping on my monitor too,so we then projected the same mattepainted image on a proper cinema screen and it was just fine with out any of these artifacts.(after getting so much grief from the big guys at work it was finally appreciated).when i say clipping the image on my monitor ,where ever there was dark patches of clouds the monitor representation of that particular area was like a black hole!

now it will be very helpfull if you guys can help me out of this color banding and clipping mess. i really need some guidance here!

(i am really sorry as i cant post that mattepainted image as the project is WIP and some copyright issues)

thanks
yatin

Is your color on your system 32bit?

It's important to understand that while your painting file may be 16 bit,
monitors and displays are still 8 bit, so you may see problems that aren't
actually there.

Speaking of color depth, I'm currently working on a commercial
and had to do some retouching work on 32 bit hdri images! Talk
about exceeding your monitors capabilities....

I'm assuming you have one of the newer dell lcd monitors 2007? If so there's a way to adjust the monitors settings so that you get rid of the banding.

By accessing service menu and adjusting RGB values you can get rid of banding. (at least it did for us at work)

You can access service menu as follows:

1. Shut down the monitor
2. power up while keeping both the menu and + buttons pressed.
3. Once the monitor starts, press - to get the service menu.

This should work for both 2007 and 2407.
