Hi,
I was just wondering how you go about when you work off a DV-plate (which is obviously much lower res).
Do you import a still from the shot in PS and up the resolution to the double for working with the actual matte?
Thanks,

As well as de-interlacing if needed. But yes you have it correct.

Remember if the DV plate has compression artifacts, ugly grain or oversaturated colour, you're going to have to match these in your matte painting! Can be a bit painful at times, but your job is to blend the two....

Yepp, you could upres it and deinterlace. Its impotant to ad the crappy DV compression after you have scaled it down. Use Shake for example and use sinc as the filter. One thing that is really good to have a grain roll. The easiest way to do this is to shot a black background with the camera. You the take that material and Add it over the scaled down matte painting. Remember to match it to the shot.
Hope that helps...
Cheers,
