Hey All,

Im learning Matte painting right now, but in some ways dont know where to begin. Ive been a web designer for 8 years and know photoshop very well. I was pretty good at art when I was a kid, always drawing and painting but kinda veered away from doing any art for fun in my teens.

Ive played around with doing some mattes but dont really seem to get anywhere. I have the first 2 cole dvds and just got the dusso one (though havent watched it yet) but they all seem to be more about the first stages i.e. blocking in, colour, perspective etc and all the online tutorials seem pretty vague. Is there anything out that ther goes into real detail about the photoshop techniques used to solve problems with integrating reference photos? Ive not got the advanced dylan cole dvd does that cover more about the photo manipulation more?

Also should I even be thinking about this at this stage? should I just be creating basic paintings focussing more on colour perspective, mood, perspective etc and not bothering with the details right now until ive got the basics right (like any discipline you learn, you start with the basics then do the advanced stuff after)

Is it good practise also to 'copy' photos just with brushes to practise perspective, colour and brush strokes?

Thanks,

Justin

This is probably the best way to get into it. Working from a photograph is the next best thing to working from life which is the best way to study. Certainly more effective than making it up out of your head.

yeah that tropical scene dylan dvd, got the ball rolling for me on the photo integration, many color correcting, and some cool channel techniques to pull mattes on trees, and clouds. alot more PS tweaking in that one.
