I'm in the same boat as Scott. Is there a key ingredient we need to have or know to land work/job as a matte painter? Any direction or insight from the pros would be more than appreciated. Thanks for your time.

The key ingridient is undoubtledly traditional art skill. Knowledge of sketching, colour theory, and composition is the main thing in creating beautiful mattes. Most matte artist start off in the traditional painting realm and move to digital. I am not saying you cant successfully create a matte without these skills but it makes easier and consistent. Another helpful piece of knowledge is a study of cinematography and photography. In essence a matte is an attempt to create a realisitc looking photograph of whats not there. Most people are familiar, whether they know it or not, with how lenses effect photographed terrian and such and wil know if something like lens flares, glows, and color bloom are missing without knowing why.
Most pros will tell you though, the starting point is a good, solid understanding of the traditional.
