Concept, Matte, or illustration?

Hello everyone,
These are a couple pieces I worked on for about an hour each. I'm here looking into expanding my talents into matte painting or concept art and i'm just curious as to what some of you here might classify these as...matte? concept? or illustration? I'm just curious because i'm aware of my capabilities, but kind of unsure as to which direction to head. I'm not sure if I should be posting here or on conceptart.org -- as much of a fan of concept art as I am, I have been extremely interested in atte painting lately, which I guess is why i'm here.

Comments/critiques are welcome.

P.S. These probably do not follow any of the laws of [space] physics, so any help on the reality of the scenes is appreciated too.

These could be contexed as mattes, they realistic enough to be used as a back drop, though should be bigger. Also because of the little time involved in creation they could as well qualify as concepts. Both are considered a type of illustration. It all really depends on the context, most work done here, though done as a matte, are really not because the are not centextually used for the purposes mattes are used for. To me it's all just a technicality concepts though tend to be less detailed in order to save time and move on to the next. Concepts are shot out at hundreds and hundreds where mattes are done once for a specific purpose.

Riktor, thanks for the reply. Until now I had a little trouble discerning the difference between matte & concept. In a way they are kind of the same, that is until a matte is actually used for production purposes. I plan on spending some time on this site and learning from others. I have some more works in pogress I am eager to post now.

Welcome and we look foward to seeing your work and answering questions. Yes they are both closely related. Concept being pre-production or pre-viz of the scene mattes being the final high detailed image for use in production. Most matte artist start with concept art and go from there.
