hi guys this is a matte painting of las vegas, for a french movie.
This not an existing place but more an "evocative" view of las vegas.

This takes me like 3 weeks to do it in 3k. with like 300 animated layers
(neon signes, light reflection, cars)
i can detail it if you guys are interest.
hope you enjoy it

Yes please! If you could post the original images etc. that would be great.

What's the movie?

Any chance of seeing a clip?

step01
its the foreground plate shooted in location near paris

the camera starts inside the center window, pull back and goes above the roof (kind of)
the scan is in cineon its 12 bits depth image meaning that you can work on 1024 levels of grey (instead of 255)

step02
its just a picture ive made in a previous trip in vegas which be usefull for the step3

step 03
this ugly thing is a speed comp done in less then an hour just to help the director to visualize the thing. This will be inserted in the avid editing.

step04
Back from vegas with a ton of pictures.
This step is very important. its the step where you have to choose your starting picture. and the comp might take a direction or another.

step 05
basic foreground/bareground comp.
This step is more for framing purpose, recentering the vanishing point.

step06
almost done adding cars and building in the far foreground.

step07
final backround.
Therer is a step which is not shown (dont have it anymore) where i have to clean the background.
meaning that i have to create one plate for highlights (neon signs, cars etc..
and one plate for dull materials (buildings roads) and neons in"off"

because all this will be animated so you need to have a position "on" and "off" for lights.

After that the highlights (neons) are separated in layers ( 1 for real higlights 2 for diffuse one or two for shadows)

step08
final comp
rebalance color and shadows for foreground an another window added

i can talk about the animated sequence if you guys want to
feel free to ask if some points are obscure.

Hi Tchook!
Like always when I see this sort of demonstration, I said to myself that this is really a work to far from my skills!
Amazing job man!
