Great lighting design and mood!
The rocks in the left BG are a little soft and blurry, and the
snow and ice on the castle is a bit too illustrative. But overall,
it's terrific!

I remember this shot in the film. I think it went by fast, i remember being really impressed and not even thinking "hey, thats a matte".

This is not a painting from the movie. It is an early concept sketch done for Steven Sommers while he was still writing the script of Van Helsing. All of the matte paintings in the movie were done by Illusion Art. This particular sketch was done in 2 days.

Amazing!
As Rrishe i think that this matte is too like "fantasy" ; it would have been better if it would be more realistic :)
(well.. english's hard!)

Well, that must be why i don't remember this scene as being a matte. I do remember being impressed with the scene where they come up to the castle.

I love the lighting in this. Not to mention the castle. I think mattes with this kind of lighting -just for the sake of the art- are my favorite. Too cool!

2 Days! That would take me 2 weeks!
